    Question 123reg dns management

I hope someone can help me

We have just recently bought a virtual server from Web Fusion and as part of that, they advised us it would be better to have the domains with 123reg for easier management

So we have moved a few domains as a test to get it up and running before committing another 40 odd domains

The virtual server is setup with the domains, dns on the virtual box is correct with all the right records, the problem is, what to change and what to remove on the 123reg side

Do we just change the name server for the domain to web fusions and delete all the records from 123?

    Anyone with this setup already?

    Thanks

    Andy

I told you this before , you need to point your NS record to your DNS server

the SOA record is held with 123 reg ( as it would be because the 123 reg are the registrars. )

Once the NS record has replicated , then anything on the 123reg side is superfluous.

Moby, I cannot point them directly at the virtual server as it only had one name server and im not sure its even working now

I tried pointed the name servers at webfusion as they host the box, but that didnt work either as the entries on 123reg for the web and mx records still seems to take it from 123reg.

123reg tech support line just rings and rings and there doesnt seem to be an email address...

    Things are not looking good...

Name server records wont update automatically - it can take up to 72 hours for a change to propagate.

Would webfusion host the DNS ?
Why not get yourself a 2nd virtual server ( good idea as a backup anyway ) and set your backup DNS on that.

if you can't do all this, then you shouldn't be messing with dns and trying to run a dns server.

1.) pay for a person to host/manage your dns
2.) use the 123reg dns managment system.

you've got one server so can't do anything with that, and you don't sound like your ontop of that much.
    It is Inevitable.....

I know what your saying Ikonia, the previous server/host did it all

Freebsd box with webmin and the domains were set up with all their dns records and it worked ok

I think the problem is involving two companies and trying to do the same thing, which obviously isn't going to work.

Using the 123reg dns management and looks like its the only way to do it with them...

I will have a look at alternative hosting companies that can do it all in one place.

but was the actual DNS server part of your old virtual server package ?

Its quite common to have the DNS hosting seperate to the web hosting.

running your own name servers is a little trickier , and certainly possible , but you need to look at the design of things a bit more.

Just use 123-Reg's DNS managment and adjust the A and MX records.
