3G : What sort of speeds and reliability?

I know nothing. At all. No idea of what I've just been offered by the company I work for, but I have to decide:

Do I want a 3G card in my laptop? They pay the expense, but I'd lose my Broadband account being payed for.

I just need tech specs on 3G. Not advice on price, as it's irrelevent (I can pay my own Broadband).

Is 3G anywhere near as quick as my Draytek and my 4mb ADSL link? I use my laptop out and about only when I find a Wireless spot thats free to join. Not essential at all. My emails and surfing are big files. (multiple photo's and image heavy pages)....and mainly (90%) I'm at home doing it.

Is 3G anywhere near a good ADSL link?

T-mobile do the best 3g at the moment...

Speeds up to 1.8mbit are available.. (but very rarely attained as they throttle down to meet capacity)
Its not bad.. but by no means reliable.

although the T-mobile web-n-walk cards and software have a option to automagically select the fastest connection (eg wifi-hotspot) and theres a "extra" available on the tarriff to give free access to all supported hotspots.. t-mobile hotspots, the cloud, openzone etc

3G is in addition to, not to replace home broadband. The guy whose room I rented in HighWycombe worked for Orange in the 3G sales side of the business and worked on nothing but 3G.

The amount of times i used to hear him screaming at his data card when it cut out.

Also if you use any VPN's forget it. My own personal experience on our work "Site" laptop when we need access to stuff, forget VPN's drop outs galore and the slowest most painful connections (i swear a normal modem is better)

If you commute a lot, and need your email on the train, its probably quite useful (although a crackberry would likely do) however i wouldnt want to use it for getting any work done from home (assuming if you paid your own broadband you couldnt get into work network)

Im with T-Mobile. Currently very reliable. I always get a connection and it is good.

Max speed I have seen is 1.1 mbps - Although connected at 1.8 mbps.

It does cut out some times while I am on the train, but it might have to do with low reception areas.

But I havent done anything with VPNs and stuff so no idea about those.

Overall, I am very happy with the service and they do have a very generous FUP (as opposed to Vodafone etc).

We have to use VPN's to do anything. Even surfing is supposed to be through our internal gateway.

All email, files up to 6mb, and lots of car browsing.....

It's a no go this year I think . Cheers guys.
