    Asus WL-38G V2

    Hey,

I've just bought this card to work under Windows XP and connect to a Netgear WGR614 router.

I'm not having much luck. To begin with I physically installed the card, extract the drivers from the supplied disk and installed them via device manager.

Windows reported the wireless network, I attempted to connect, I entered the WEP key and then it just sat there... trying to connect... for ages...

Eventually I gave up, uninstalled the card and installed it using the setup on the provided disk. This came with utilities, as I'd had little luck with Windows' own, I decided I'd give Asus' utilities a go.

I managed to connect, though the connection was unreliable and download speeds hovered around 5-20ksec. Unhappy with this I tried a few different channels on the card, hoping to get a more reliable connection.

The thing is, both Windows and the Asus utility report reception as "Excellent"?

Anyway, to cut a long story short, after fiddling with the card's channel it now won't connect at all. Not even if I return it to the exact same settings as before.

I even took the card out deleted the *.sys driver file, installed it into a different PCI slot in the hope that starting fresh would resolve all my problems - wrong.

So is this a problematic card, is there a card considered the wireless network card to have, one I can just plug in that will work off-the-bat?

Sorry if I'm rambling a bit!

    laze.

    Hey,

I borrowed a Netgear WAG311 from work today.

I managed to get connected, I believe the Asus card was giving me false signal readings.

At the moment I have two bars of signal strength in the Windows Wireless Zero Configuration Utility.

What's strange is, if my flat-mate comes to my room, his laptop has 5 bars and everyone else in the house has 5 bars constantly? I've now tried two cards and I'm completely bemused by my low signal.

If I were to buy one more wireless card, to try and achieve a decent signal, what would you lot recommend?

Please help, I must fuel my internet addicition.

    laze.

Your friends laptop and netstumbler would be my first stop, find out if the location in your room is the problem (not in general, specifically where the PC is). Check the antenna connection is secure and you are getting good contact. Also download the latest drivers, not the ones on the CD,they may well be significantly improved. If none of that works then try disabline WEP and see if it will allow you to connect without encryption. Without wishing to send you into a spate of bold usage again a wireless router that supported increasing transmit power such as the WRT54GL+DDWRT would have given you more options.

    Hi,

The router in this thread was bought for a friend as I clearly stated in the thread. I'm not using it, never planned to use it and it's completely unrelated to the problem I'm having now. If I were buying a router for myself, I'd have bought the WRT54GL.

    Back on topic.

I've just moved to a new house share, the problem is I cannot connect to their existing wireless network.

I'm using the latest drivers and as stated I've tried two separate cards, one with an external antenna.

    I'll read up on Netstumbler.

    Thanks for your help.

    laze.
