Sync speed and download speed issues - Help please !

Hi All

I wonder if someone can give me some advice.

Why would my wireless gateway have faster upload speeds than download speeds if upstream sync rate is slower than downstream sync rate ( see below stats )..

If I do a speed test, upstream speed comes in at 488Kbps speeds, but download speeds are like 220Kbps - that's just insane !!!.

Something weird is going on with my BT line I think. I am about 3.1KM from my exchange, plus my line seems noisy, but the speeds I get is horrendous, especially the last few days.... :surprised:

My exhange ( Filton ) shows all GREEN so no congestion AFAICS. It reports I should get up to 2Mbs speeds given my phone number, but this is just rediculous.:O_o1:

I have my gateway plugged straight into the BT master socket with the front panel unscrewd.

Gateway = Linksys WAG354G with lastest firmware.

Stats currently are as follows ( after a few gateway reboots ) - :

Downstream Rate: 1056 Kbps
Upstream Rate: 448 Kbps

Downstream Transmit Power: 0
Upstream Transmit Power: 0

is it on the master socket? might need to be because you are a fair way from your exchange.

Are you on an ADSL MAX product? (I'm guessing you are from your upload rate)

It looks like you have a stuck BRAS profile - contact your ISP and inform them of this and they should be able to get it reset :)

If it's any consolation I posted the same thing then realised ;)

Your line seems to be pretty lone an attenuation over 60 proves this.


Syncing at 1 meg you should be getting Throughput of 1000kbps really but It could be that if your line is really intermittent that you have had a really low sync event.

The way BT`s system works is taht if a line is intermittent they lower the Speeds to something the line seems more stable at. If the Line is stable at the lower speed then the BT system should then up the speed if it stays stable for 3 days.

With 60 db atten that figure of about 1.5 seems about right .

That was typo should have been 1 m also 60 db should equate to 6 k approx and 3.5k to about 47db -maybe you should try a different router . Know my young one had same prob and tried different wireless routers till he was happy. I was quite surprised at the differences between the various equipment.

My line is approx 4 K and My attenuation is 60.

I have seen ppl who live next door to each other and their attenuation has been 20 db different.

DIfferent equipment does make a lot of difference. At home I use a draytek 2600 with the long line firmware on. I have tested BTs 2100 router as well as a 2wire and a netgear and have seen the SNr drop from 15 down to 11 and attenuation fluctuate by about 5.

ATM at work we are supporting the new speedtouch routers. The 585 is a brilliant router and has some very nifty features although you need to acess by telnet. They are also very stable routers and very easy for newbies to set up

Kopite , Yes , quite agree, 60 db at 1 m was based on standard copper length of 0.5 dia copper . There can be a lot of variations which will affect the overall result e.g. using 0.9 dia copper for a short distance will take 10 db out likewise having a couple of km's of 0.4 aluminium will put 10 db in.
