    Vista Gigabit Networking

    Hi,

I've got a Vista Ultimate box and 2 x MCE2005 linked up via a Gigabit network, now the transfer rates between the 2 x MCE2005 boxes are fine and if I push a file from the MCE2005 boxes to the Vista box again the transfer rate is what I expect (approx 20/30%)

Now if I try and push a file from Vista to either of the MCE2005 boxes then I get a throughput of about 6%!!

    Anybody seen similar behaviour?

I've tried loads of different things but my Gigabit network just crawls.

    1. Latest drivers for NIC's
    2. Turning Remote Differential Compression off (no difference)
    3. Settiing "netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled" (no difference)
    4. Hotfix KB931770 isn't really my problem, just slow throughput.

I'm at a loss, I have a Gigabit network that runs at 10Mbps.

    I have tried both a Linksys EG1032 v2 and Marvell Yukon 88e8001/8003/8010
NIC with my Netgear GS605 v2 5 port Gigabit switch but it's terrible!

    HELP!

Make sure your RJ-45's are crimped properly and securely and there isn't any loose strands hitting your TX pins, that'll royally screw up your signal quality.

RJ45 is the connector, nothing to do with the cables as such, and not an indicator of the cable's potential data transfer speeds.

Cat5e cable and above will allow gbit speeds, assuming the cable lengths are in-spec.

It's odd that the slow speed only occurs one way, and not the other though.

Have you tried doing hard drive read/write speed tests on the vista box? Probably not that, mind you...

All the cables are Cat5e and fine.

see what happens when you disable your antivirus.

Also try booting in safe mode with networking and seeing if teh results change.

You don't think its down to AutoSensing not working properly?. I've seen it happen on 10/100 cards where you can get this effect of transfer being different in different directions.

Can you set manually set all the cards to gigabit full duplex?.

manually setting to gigabit isn't considered valid as per ethernet specs - gigabit must always be autonegotiated

try this. boot some linux CDs, see whether you still have problems. if not, it's a vista issue. if so, it's a cabling issue

oh, another one to try is driver updates (i.e. not the vista built-in drivers). i used to get terrible network throughput in the vista beta with the default drivers

Disable as many services/applications as you can and try again. The Linux boot CD is also a good idea.

That switch is notoriously flaky and bad about auto-sensing so it could be that also.
