    Network extension.

Current set up is as follows:
D-Link G604T router with D-Link ANT24-1400 antenna mounted outside. Currently 2 pcs in house ground floor one has a good enough signal at all times. Upstairs one is ok most of time occasionally dropping out.
Want to move upstairs one further away, tried it in required position and get zilch.
    So considering the following

    1 Bigger(more gain) antenna

    2. Install an extender ie D-Link DWL-G710

3 Or install in upstairs pc the DWA-142 USB antenna

Currently upstairs antenna has a Belkin USB antenna arrangement so am not confident going D-Link USB would help.

So which is probably better antenna change or install an extender?

Would like to keep with D-LInk to ensure compatability

    Cheers

    One word, ethernet.

Never drops, always silly fast, costs less, isn't incompatible with other manufacturers components, and gives less aggregate hassle.

About another 10 feet only. Tried my best to move the USB antenna around only getting a reasonably reliable working setup in the one position, nowhere near where I want it.

Is there a chance of installing a PCI card in the upstairs computer? something with an external aerial (ie on a cord). Should give you a more reliable connection, and the opportunity to put the aerial where needed.

If you can't figure out how to plug an ethernet cable into a RJ-45 port, you have no hope for wireless, since it never 'just works'(tm).

The crimping and termination of cat5 into wall boxes is slightly more difficult

Actually that's the easy part, especially after crimping 30 RJ-45's onto cat6 in one day *grumbles*. Anyway, that level of effort is only needed if you want to do a professional job of it.

The upstairs Antenna is a Belkin one which plugs into a USB port ie has a cable. I really dont want a USB cable crawling around the room looking unsightly, hence one very close in proximity to the pc itself is required.

It's not drivel, I was stating a fact. I spent one day dropping 9 lengths of cat6 into 3 rooms, crimp them, plug them into a gigabit switch in the loft, jam them in ducting, punch them onto wall sockets (along with phone extensions lines), and all the links worked first time, I haven't had to look at it in the 10 months since I installed it. Can you say the same?

If you want to play with a toy network medium, be my guest, but if you want permanent hassle free network, take my advice, either way, please don't call facts drivel, and you don't need to be rude when people suggest proper practices.

I asked a question on a specific topic requiring a specific answer not your opinion on ethernet cabling. That is NOT an option, and yes I can plug a cable into a socket I would have you know. Additionally I am not the slightest bit interested in how many ends you terminated in a day, we all have our kinks I assume

stick some flat tin foil on some flat cardboard and make 2 0f them and then stick them behind the antenna facing each other. should give you some extra distance.
