The dhcp client should be enabled by default, however if not http://www.more.net/technical/win/dhcp.html should be of use

Change the IP/DNS details for whichever NICs you want to use DHCP on to autodetect. It's the default setting.

Make sure the DHCP client service is running, you can check this in services.msc. Then open a command window, and type:

    Code:
    ipconfig /release $interface
    ipconfig /renew $interface
Where $interface is the name assigned to your NIC.

According to this post you don't need it.

This is still to get Xbox live working, right?

If it is, Windows XP wont do routing be default, you need Internet Connection Sharing set up, as DirectHex pointed out at the bottom of that thread that mycarsavw linked to.

sorry, i'm still not 100% clear on what you're doing

you said in the other thread that you wanted to get the xbox online, which is connected to the PC and the PC to the net

before being helped, we need to know:
    1) what type of modem you have (ethernet, usb)
    2) what type of cable is linking the xbox to the pc

if the answer to 1 is usb, then you don't actually need or want a dhcp client running. if the answer to 2 is anything but " a crossover cable" it won't work regardless
