if you have DSL based broadband then you need a DSL router , if you have cable broadband , then you need a cable router![]()

thats the simple answer out of the way. the other answer is: What do you mean?
You don't have to get one from your ISP, but you do need the right type for cable or ADSL.
EDIT: What moby said, with an exception. If you have an ethernet ADSL modem, you can use a cable/broadband router as oppoed to one with a built in ADSL modem.
so no compatibility. because my mate thought you had to have it compatable ah well thanks for the help

They are all compatible because they all conform to the same networking standards, but they are not specific to any single internet provider.
