best dedicated server website host for a multipurpose site for my interests etc ....

looking and willing to spend a decent amount per month not crazy amounts, what will i be using ?

well want to build a small social site like faceparty but without all the annoying children and childish multicolour bubble writing etc. id like a wee chatroom too and a forum of the same type as my particular favourite and most visited forum ......your in it ;)

lots of sites have different types of forum layout and searching but the type we use here always seems the most logical and well laid out and easy to search etc

do i have to buy this bulletin style board software or will most of the hosts who offer pagebuilding offer a forum of this style and chatrooms

and the ability to create profiles themselves as i cant be bothered nor do i want to know my mates passwords etc so the usual join a site process with selecting username and password and email and then confirming its there email by clicking on a system sent email like just about every site that you need to register for !

and as i said profile creation to see whos who and who whos upto what these days as personally i never go on msn messenger etc anymore as they get annoying and i find email boring

long since left the sites like faceparty and all its spinoffs because of the freaky pervs and weirdos and its constant push to buy that stupid cool tools to reply to more messages or look at more than so many profiles


main thing for me is sleek simple design and fast serving and lots of space as i will also use it as a filestore for documents and phone backups etc which are invaluable ....aslong as i can keep this hidden from my mates that is !!

also wee avatars and signatues like we have here which can just be linked to whatever persons profile page

hopefully this cant be too difficult ive seen some hosts offer forums and chat etc but im unsure of what too look for when it comes to new visitors signing up themselves and creating there own individual username/profile

and the ability to hop between chat and forum an profile with same login details , just somethin easy to use an covers our needs

also can i run other websites on something like a dedicated server? e.g. different domain names and theme , as i may wanr to have a site just of my own where i can ramble nonsense like this here post :) but with my name as the domain if available obviously

and also ip address i would imagine would be logged as no doubt you always get some a...hole out to cause trouble so i could possibly block them or whatever from rejoining under another username

this forum software you do need to buy, you can get it here: http://www.vbulletin.com/, there are free alternatives but don't have the same amount of features, and addons that vBulletin has.

I'm not sure what software you'll be using for the faceparty type site, but with vBulletin you can ban IP Addresses, every post there is an icon that mods and admins can click to take them to info about the IP Address, there are addons fro vBulletin which notifies you when two people with the same IP Address have registered.

Missed out something important about dedicated severs, you'll need to find out from whover you choose to go with if the server is managed or not, if it isn't managed then you'll need someone to manage it for you, if you don't know how to do it yourself :)

im gonna think of some ways to make money but between me and family chipping in along with me but only to pay for itself as dont want tax man or anything chasing me so even letting mates have custom emails or a little storage box or something an they can chip in too

it would just be something simple people visit the homepage and click a register and do the usual and just the ability to have say ... just one page they can write up what there upto etc and have a page of a few pics linked from a thumbnail of them

what you want and what you get are two different things though if its too difficult to implement then id just stick with a forum and chatroom for the social stuff and have a section for me to experiment and try out different web technologies when bored :)

When you have the site up and running, I would highly recomend Google Adsense they pay on a PPC (Pay Per Click) basis just don't click your own ads, or get your friends/family to click them or you will be banned, when your site gets more popular/more visitors you can start looking at CPM (Cost Per Mille) ad networks, they pay every time the ad is served/shown, might sound good but they don't pay as high as PPC networks.

Dedicated servers are the best way to go about setting up your site, if you are expecting a lot of hits/visits, hosting files, setting up a network of sites, Faceparty type sites do get a lot of hits so dedicated is definitely your best bet.

Managed basically means they install the OS, all the required software to get you "online", but they may not install the software you want to use on you site, i.e. they install the back-end stuff, they will upgrade your hardware, and monitor "the hardware and general health of the server/site".

I am pretty sure everything you want done can be done from vBulletin addons, if there is something that's not how you want it, their are a number of coders who will be able to modify/code what you want, some will ask a fee, some won't :)

A Linux OS would be the best choice, which distro you chose is really up to you, I've got CentOS installed on my server.

Starting your own site is something that should be thought about, because running the site can be very costly, and time consuming, it is fun tho :)

oops meant pxe boot atleast i think it is booting from a network connection just wondered if i could boot from my own site , again nothing essential just a thought :)

i dont particularly want to end up like faceparty theres too much competition and im most definatly inexperienced to handle something like that

had a look around the scaraweb like some of the power series now to look at the other suggestions and vbulletin sounds like a very good option still to have a look there tho

adsense etc i suppose i could just stick it there and see what happens ,

i dont think i will be advertising it inless i have a lightbulb moment and think of something usefull with potential as i know there is people who meliciously click on companys adds to add more cost to the company .....atleast i think thats what i read

maybe there already is software for integrating this sort of feature and simply upload the torrent to the site and wait till it scans for new torrents, ive done similar with azureus running on my laptop and accessing it via a plugin and using my nokia n95 to monitor torrents cant remember if i could submit a torrent for it to download as i couldnt download torrents from the the big sites with the n95

again not a big issue but it would save me being a data horder as i said before i always mess about with linux and various other stuff that i seem to "need" , but rarely use so just wasting space
it would be nice to have some of my favs sitting in a private directory on whatever server i purchase and ready to download when i want without all the hunting around various places

Weebroonieuk - please don't take this as a flame, but I think you really need to scope out exactly what it is that you want to do with this box. You keep adding more functionality that I'm not 100% certain you understand (PXE boot from your site? what and why?)

Once you have everything planned THEN you should be looking for a server that fits the bill, not looking at a server and then seeing what you can do with it - chances are this is a VERY expensive way to experiment with this kinda thing.

That's not a dedicated server GoNz0 - the cheapest dedicated servers they do are £39.99 a month.

Other than that I stick by what I said - plan it out before you buy it. Can you afford to spend a minimum of £40 a month (bearing in mind that's on a virtual 256k pipe) while you play around getting things to work? Personally I'd set up a test box at home, learn how it all fits together and then look at shared hosting. If it then grows beyond the need for shared hosting there's no reason you can't go dedicated and transfer everything to a dedicated host.

i know i could probably go with shared solution and probably should from a cost point of view but if it does need upgraded and/or switching companys etc is what makes me want to ge dedicated in the first place , seem like most stable platform and all the horror storys of dns problems and things that i dont really know much about so id like to just register a domain and point it somewhere once and be done with it

nothings definate yet either im only weighing up possibilitys and pros an cons

i was thinking of fireing up vmware and maybe try some linux distros and or download the prebuilt vm machines from the market place and see what i can do

kind of why im pointing at streamline, 3 month trial, then after 3 months if you dont know what you want select the small package, they say you can upgrade any time so no DNS issues as its on the same host !

thats why im with them, i would rather spend the money on the mrs than a dedicated server thats not getting used.

(and the upgrading is a 2 click in control panel and jobs done :))

I would steer clear of dedicated hosting TBH. The overhead is way too much - can you really be bothered to patch everything constantly yourself? Are you a security paranoid who can spot rootkits which have been dropped on there etc etc.

Most of the stuff you are talking about can be managed with something like Drupal.

Do you really mean streaming audio and video, or just having it for download?

If you've got your heart set on having a dedicated box, I'd look at getting a static IP address at home and setting up your router to forward requests to it - if you're only prototyping with a few users - that could be the way forward.

One final point would be that you don't need anything even vaguely approaching a Xeon for serving. You'll most probably be using a Linux distro and Apache which will happily run with spare capacity on an 800Mhz P3....

i never said i needed any xeon or dedicated servers , i never said it will just be a forum either .....one minute im wanting it to do too many things the next im only wanting it for a forum ???


i cant be bothered with portforwarding through my router as the router is just a linksys wifi router its nowt special and isp is ukonline so every other month or soo it needs the plug pulled sometimes more often , hosting a site myself would only slow down my own and girlfriends experience and as for spending money on her she actually makes a hell of alot more than me and ive just got her a new convertable for her 30th so i think it will be her thats spending the cash on me for a bit as im skint now!

i said it would ideally be a social site with profiles and chat for linking up my mates and in turn them linking theres just like all the other sites do what i want for myself is a forum for various stuff

as im not much of an chatroom person myself i would use a forum more but would be nice if i could stick in a chatroom aswell

as for media streaming just wondering what kind of machine id need as obviously it will be empty till i get people online if i or anyone sticks up video clips for instance i reckon they consume alot of your bandwidth and speed , , im well aware i can run a webserver on a p3 etc , hell i could buy one the gumstix computers and use one of them or even the rj45 connector with a server built in ..... will it handle me having a small social site with a forum have seperate userspace for me so i can have proper reliable backups of my computer and store files i feel i want to keep ofline and held alot more safely than i ever could

and updating and patching ? emm thats why i would be getting a managed server as all this is done for you and make sure the whole os kernal and epps and security patches are all done for you ....... well thats what just about all the deciated sites promise for their managed servers ...

I agree that competing (or trying to) would be very hard work, and would require someone with a great deal of experience, the only reason I mentioned "faceparty type sites..." is because from what I understood from your first post, was that you wanted a faceparty like site :)

I didn't/don't really advertise my site, just have a link to it in my sig on some forums, and one of my sites has done well I believe (about 50 new registrations daily, about 12,500 unique hits a month, and about 300,000 page views a month :)), because this site is a unique market it gets alot of "word of mouth" advertising :)

There are a few people/companies who do/will try and sabotage your "business" by clicking your ads, most advertising companies can track this and you won't be charged for the "invalid clicks", that's the Internet for you...

To be perfectly honest you don't really need to know HTML/coding to make money from your site, but it is a great help if you do, then you can add unique features to your site which no other sites have :),

When I started my main site, I didn't have any previous experience of running a site, I just played around on free hosts then jumped to paid shared hosting, then made a jump to dedicated, I did have a lot of trouble with shared hosting, that was mainly because of the rate at which the sites traffic was growing, I would suggest to anyone who starts (or is thinking of starting) a site, and expecting a high amount of traffic, if they can afford a dedicated server straight away then go for it...

You are correct about "we all got to start somewhere", it is the only way to gain experience...

(Almost) Everyone who starts a site is really looking to make money from it, but what most people don't realise is that you have to put the money and time in, before you will earn a (fairly) decent amount...

There are a few "point and click" (WYSIWYG: What You See Is What You Get) template editors/site builders, I can't recommend any off the top of my head, I just code it all manually :)

If google notice a click pattern they will ban you without hesitation, so my suggestion is to not tell anyone to click the ads, you will find it difficult to find another ad network which is as good as google.

Ummm... I think there is a program/script called rapidleech or something which downloads files from other servers to yours, however I don't think much sites would appreciate this and may start "attacking" your server, if they find out.

Unmettered is only really for high bandwidth sites, like rapidshare, megaupload e.t.c, so you are correct to look for metered, you get a decent amount of bandwidth with metered anyway :)

I think most of the offers on WHT, are genuine offers, so you don't really have to worry about "fake" offers too much.

cPanel/WHM have this feature, well truelly it's cPanel, but you choose from WHM which scripts you want to allow to be installed with one click via cPanel.

I agree with Splash to some extent, as in you should have some sort of plan down on paper with what is essential, and what isn't. I know you have stated what you want and what isn't essential in this thread, which is good :)

You should have a plan with everything that is needed, when what is needed is completed and you have thought of more things then they can get worked on :)

Consider a dedicated server very carefully; I got one for my clan and rent out the extra space to other clans, I just do game servers and Teamspeak.

Web hosting is a completely different ball game and opens up a lot more security issues.

And its all good and well saying you can get a dedicated server for £40, but managed as well; you can expect to pay £50 to £80 for a decent managed service, you have to read the details very carefully to see what is managed.

You can get 'semi managed' services but again you have to check and see what they will provide.

lol thanks ian i think i will fire up vmware and see if i can trial vbulletin or as i said download some of the ready to deploy virtual machines and try administering and some cpanel demo's if possible

i dont deny the fantasy of earning millions from "just a website" but as you say and i know theres plenty crooks on the net and plenty of server attacks etc and generaly alot of peolple out to make a quick buck, i think the space for doing anything to differentiate what id like in a website and the thousands already out there

i moved too slow in this respect :)

if the site paid for itself i couldnt care less if there was an easy eniough billing system, i reckon a quid or 2 per month would be more than enough after i get a few mates onboard who would have no problem in helping if i needed it

also the salesmen seem to be open to a fair bit of haggling in the wht forum and some really good deals are posted and then some users hussle even more and get even better deals!

some very usefull links and advice and if this cpanel that i keep hearing about can do some 1 click install of scripts etc that would be dandy! well i know it wont be that easy but i dare say theres probably alot better tools for new uesers like myself than there ever was so i reckon i could put something fairly decent together (hopefully!)

and with vbulletin being so versatile and looks fairly easy to deploy should keep me busy !

cPanel and vBulletin are great software and I find them very easy to use and configure, if you need help with anything just ask :)

Start small. If you're dipping your toe in, then go for shared hosting. A dedicated server for what you want to do is MASSIVE overkill. You'll find that you'll use no where near enough of the server resources with a message board and a few other experimental websites. Even if the site does get big enough to warrant a dedi. server, which sounds unlikely, then it's not hard to move it across anyway.

Be careful with WHT, I only use it to read on the user's experiences and recommendations and steer clear of the Offers forums, personally. Like the rules there state "You must have 10 (ten) posts and 7 (seven) days of membership before starting a thread within." That's nothing. Anyone can post random BS, wait a week and put an advert up.

Well yes, if someone has a low post rating and posts junk all the time then I would be very careful. If they have a proper company site and contact details, 100 posts in the offer section with decent feedback then you can be very sure that it is a proper company.

WHT is almost exclusively junk. Even outside the fofer forus there are so many fake accounts to mislead people.
