Can ping but have no other connectivity.

Hi all.

Two dells hardwired to a router on BT BB. One has no issues other than getting no cnxn which is normally solved by rebooting the router. The other has just suddenly refused to connect. I have changed the CAT cable, tried no firewall, and can ping ok. IPconfig shows no surprises.

Assuming its a machine thing as the other pc can connect, use browser, get email etc. The fact the the pc with issues can ping ok is a surprise, and the IPconfig looked ok. {Although not an expert here}

Should I be tracing next to see if anything looks odd? About at the limit of my knowlege here now.

Any ideas appreciated.

When you say the PC can ping, can it ping the other computer or stuff on the internet? Post the output of 'ipconfig /all' from both machines and I'll take a look.

yep, also a tracert www.bbc.co.uk or something similar.

Yeah the ping gets out to bbc.co.uk and anywhere else. I'll post the output from IPconfig, as asked, a bit later when back. I should say its my 15 year old son's pc on a network with his mums. I live round the corner :-)

More info : In 'Network Connections' under 'LAN or High Speed Internet' the connection is showing as 'connected'. Also, strangely, an icon comes up on the task bar saying 'the BB cnxn is uplugged'. Well obviously it is connected physically. Have changed the cable with no different result! Since thats been coming up the issues have occurred.

Router is LINKSYS WAG54G ADSL Gateway, hardwired not wireless.

Also I have tried ping the IP address above from my home pc, and get no joy at all. Hmmm, well this is how you learn more isn't it :-)
