Thumbs up ADSL 14th April... finally

The modern day world finally will reach my village on the 14th of April, and I guess its time for me to pay a little more attention to ADSL, who are the people to go with etc.

So with all of you with broadband I ask the following questions
Are you on 20:1 or 50:1 contention - does it really make _THAT_ much of a difference.

Are you on a static or a dynamic IP address, I'd guess i'll be after a static address for developing web sites and testing stuff like that while i'm at home.

Also there will be lots at least 3 or 4 machines connected to the net, so recommendations for 4 way lan/router/firewall solutions please.

And of course who is your favourite supplier, I've read adslguide this morning and it seems Eclipse seems to be #1 at present.

    Views appreciated

Nildram, Eclipse & Zen seem to be the favourites, but I'm in the same boat here for ISP choice

We are due for a Feb18th activation (*pimp* Thanks to my campaign *pimp*) so id better get things sorted out soon

ATM I'm leaning toward Zen due to their 5day setup time compared with the other 2's 10day. Saying that Nildram have been very strongly recommended to me though.

Pipex on a 50:1 ratio with us

Static but dont worry as there are ways round that with Dynamic DNS sites etc.

Steal a PII from somewhere and run a smoothwall

what do you want out of a router ?

Zen are great from a support POV ( pimp as I'm a Zen reseller )

I'd rather have the firewall/hub thing all together for ease of connection. If I had space to put more computers about the place I would go smoothwall but my bedroom and available space is already at max.

ZEN: Static IP. Guaranteed no contention issues. Only snag I've found is that you can't reverse DNS.
Order the Router through them - Get the Draytek jobbie.

I already had a router, so just needed the modem. Thinking I could save a tenner, I didn't order it through zen. Only when it came to setting up did I realise that if I'd bought it from Zen, I'd have 2 microfilters included. So for now I've a very noisy phone line!

I use karoo - I have no choice.

My connection is 512/256 @ 50:1 contention ratio. Speeds range between 50 and 55kb/s usually, which I'm happy with.

I use a single port router hooked up to a switch.

You will be able to get much better than me for the same price, I'm sure.

Cant give discounts unless we get some serious business ( ie start getting a decent discoutn from zen rather than a one off kickback )

Have been with Zen since last March, no complaints at all.

They had me up and running in three days and I was initially attracted to them as no minimum contract, you can sign up for just one month should you wish. £27.99 pcm.

Three machines networked, Belkin 5 port switch, Zoom ADSL Modem, no router as yet.

When I can get my hands on an old K6-2 or PII system someone's chucking out, think I'll go for the smoothwall option.

Downtime? No, not from Zen directly, as far as I know.

The local telephone exchange, however, have carried out maintenance around 6 times in the past 10 months or so, usually taking a few hours in the early hours of Sunday morning.
