    Odd FTP problem.

Right bear with me, my FTP, ftp.chuckskull.co.uk is completely inaccessible to me. I can ping the server, but trying to open any kind of FTP connection ends badly. Filezilla times out, smartFTP aborts, FF sits loading indefinitely and IE just crashes.

I've tried just about everything, opened ports, checked NAT, disabled firewalls, changed DNS(and flushed) about 5 times. Tried other clients etc etc. I can connect fine with other FTP servers. I've connected fine with this one in the past. I've contacted my host and everything has been triple checked at their end. The server is online and working fine. Confirmed by a couple of mates. Who can access it.

So I'm puzzled. I've even tried formatting and resetting my router to factory settings.

Anyone who can figure this out gets a beer.

Try it via the command line - took a while for me to get a prompt - mebbe your clients are timing out?

Do you run the ftp server? Can you see the logs? Could be taking so long due to reverse DNS lookups failing?

Commandline connects, closes connection, then hangs. I dont run the server it's hosted by uk2.net. Apart from a quickfix tool, there's not much that can be done from that end. I've gone back and forth with them for about 2 weeks now, their pretty confident it's at my end. Other people being able to get to the server supports that. Only logs I have are basic traffic hits, nothing else.

Hmm - I had a problem with my own ftp a few nights ago, when my host moved to a new server... for some reason it didn't like SmartFTP - so I switched to FireFTP (firefox plugin) which for some reason worked fine....

There's not been any maintenance work on your server has there? Anything that would change it settings wise?

Nope nothing has changed. It's been sitting on the same machine since I bought the domain ages ago. Nothing should have changed at this end either, but still no connect.

Check my first message and you'll know that it's working. That's the whole point of the thread.

The server is online, alive and kicking, but I cant get to it. Everything is as it should be and I can connect to every other FTP in the world. Just not this one.

I haven't personally, but other people have logged in with my account no problem. It's the only account on the FTP. So either it's something on this machine, that is unaffected by formatting windows and resetting the router, or all my friends are lying to me to save my host some work

So it's something local to your PC or router then. If you've already reset your router to factory defaults then I'm guess a firewall program. I know you said you'd tried with it disabled but I've seen on a few occasions where firewalls say they're disabled but they're not. Try uninstalling your firewall and try again.

Same even after a format and windows firewall disabled. No others installed.

If you can connect to other FTP sites then that implies that your ISP isn't blocking FTP connections. I'd go back to the host and get them to double check they don't have any IP filtering in place.

Can you get a friends PC connected at your place to rule out your ISP and router causing problems?

Me and the host have been exchanging 2/3 emails a day for the past few weeks. moving an entire PC here, is a bit of a nuisance. I need to buy a new router soon anyway, so I might just see how that affects things.
