Enable wireless network connection BEFORE login?

I have a laptop and a PC, the laptop is running Vista Home Basic and the PC Vista Ultimate.

Well I tried setting the group policy on the laptop to make it wait for the network before login, but there is no GPEdit.msc

Does anyone know of a way to do this maybe by a reg key or service etc??? Thanks.

As its a laptop, i wouldn't be suprised if it was an intel card.

If so check out the intel proset tools, they are not as user friendly, but much more flexible, might be of intrest

I have had a look in device manager and it is: Atheros AR5005G Wireless Network Adapter

See I need this because Windows tries to connect to the drives (where the desktop/files/etc) are stored, so you don't get any icons (you also get a crap load of errors like "the drive connection has not been restored") until you refresh after the network has been connected.

The wireless needs to be enabled PRIOR to login.

Don't know if it's similar to the Intel cards, but there should be some software installed along with the card. On the Intel software, pre-logon connection isn't installed by default, you have to go in via Add/Remove Programs and add the component to allow it. Possibly the Atheros equivalent is similar?

if you let windows manage the wireless connection you can set it to load up before login.
its the same issue we had at work when using a VPN over the network via a router, you need to VPN to connect before you can login the domain :-)

Well, I just uninstalled all the Acer stuff that came with the laptop (Acer Empowering Technology), etc... and it seems to have done the trick, the network is enabling before login.

    Thanks.
