    dLAN over 3 ring/phase

    Hi all,

Does anyone know if or how it's possible to use dLAN in a home that has 3 ring/phase electric?

Do you have to join each ring/phase together?

    Thanks in advance

As i understand it, you don't need to do anything with your mains, but i thought that DLan was still very expensive. £100+ to connect two PC's and you'd still need a router for ADSL connection etc.

Just to clarify, it's 3 phase, not ring.

Well, on looking on the Devolo pages, it states:

    Question:
In my house are three separate phases. Can dLAN connect one phase to another?

    Answer:
Yes,it can.Phase coupling operates without an installation of a phase coupler using dLAN adapters. You also can establish your network connections via two or three phases.

So I'm guessing a dLAN is required on each phase to join them together?

How big is your house to put rings on seperate phases? We have seperate phases for our heating system but our rings are all still on one, lol.

As mentioned above, it's 3 phases, not rings (I'm not a sparky, so didn't know the difference).

    So I guess 3 phases doesn't make a difference?

as long as your system terminates at your own meter your ok... just watch out for flats that have a one off payment system, you will all terminate at one substation and that can cause problems.

Sorry, need to make another correction. Apparently, it is 3 ring and not 3 phase!?

    How does that effect things?

You won't have 3 phase power in the home, unless you live in a factory.

The 3 rings you mention is basically 3 seperate electric circuits you plug into around your house. Normally there is a seperate ring for upstairs and downstairs.

How this will affect the device in question I'm not sure, but I presume the signals cross at the distribution box anyway, so it won't be an issue.

Hmm. In that case, I might give it a try, or contact Devolo just to be sure I don't want to spend about £100 to find it doesn't work and is a waste of time!

I have tried using the £129 Devolo kit from pcworld on 2 separate rings, I have the main part of the house, then there is an extension/living quarters which is on a separate ring. I tried to install the system on 2 rings and the other part of the kit was not recognised as being available. Once I moved to the boundary of the main part of the house, the system worked perfectly.

I am trying to find out how to overcome this and if I find anything will post it here.

    Thanks

Well, I ended up picking up the Devolo 85mbps version and tried them all around the house in the locations they'll want to use them and they worked perfectly! I've not got another 2 and plan to rig them up on Sunday and hang a wireless AP off the end of one aswell.

    Will keep you posted.

Thats great news for you I sat down and drew out a rough plan of the two electricity rings, Devolo plugs and wireless coverage in the house, and thought that if I plug a Devolo into the closest "e. ring 1" to the 2nd pc on "e. ring 2" and then plug a wireless ap off it, it should connect up with the wireless router which is also devolo connected.

Once I have the equipment sorted and tested I shall post the results.
