    ISP Recomendations

    Hey All,

I wouldnt normalyl ask a blanket question like this, but I'm hoping i can get some decent words of recomendation.

I am shortly moving house and will be in an ADSL area only and therefore will lose my old telewest 10mb connection. I am looking for a suitable ISP that will cover all of my needs whilst remaining reasonably priced.

My requirements are as follows :

High Speed - preferably at least 6mb (i understand that distance rfom exchange etc will affect this)
    No evening bandwidth shaping
Unlimited downloads (I'm a high bandwidth user due to some work and home requirements)

The main thing is for me to have a high constant speed - i cant be affected by any shaping as a lot of the work i do is in the evening.

I will be based in north essex, between colcester an chelmsford. I will most likely be on a BT phone line. Dont particularly need any goodies such as wireless router, online storage orbundled software.. Static IP preferably available but not necessary.

Hopefully some of you can offer some suggestions based on actual experience of yourself or friends / family.

    Thanks in advance.

    Kip

TitanADSL www.titan-adsl.co.uk or ADSL24 www.adsl24.co.uk we have just migrated our office broadband to TitanADSL, customer service is
    fantastic.

our pings on demon were 150-250 and on Titan 10-20!

Guess there are three factors, low cost, features, quality and you can have two out of 3! That is, it can be chaep with lots of features, but may not be reliable (or CS may be poor), or it can be chaep with good reliability/support, but few features (download limits) or you vcan have good support, lots of features (high/no limits, good CS) but it won't be cheap.

If you want good support then I would revcommennd Zen. It isn't cheap (home product is £35/month with 50Gbyte download - after that is reached you pay so much per G/byte extra) or there office product is around £80/month for unlimited downloads and a faster upload speed (no cap on upload quantity on any packages)

Not cheap (and some would say that there are other suppliers that offer better value for money) but you need to set your requirements in order of priority and look for a supplier that most closely meets them. Once you have narrowed it down a bit, then perhaps ask which of the ones you are looking at have people had direct experience with.

I have zero complaint for bethere unlimited service so far. Great speed all day long, no shaping what so ever. Upto 24M speed with 1000+kbps upload for £24 which isn't too bad. BTW, from my personal experience BTbroadband should be best avoided. I can't believe I paid 5 quid more every month for much inferior service(8M/50Glimit/12hour shaping).

im thinking so far bethere would be a reasonable choice. I its available

    im moving away from BT.

I'm happy to spend reasonable amount of money on the service but not over the odds - if im paying 35£ a month i dont expct a download limit.

    ROFL at AOL recommendation
    HAHA

I have tiscali adsl, they are awsome but this is after 5 years and 4 of them years arguing and threatening them. Now my connection is awsome! Dont know why never wanted to ask why just incase they accidently had bumped my profile in a good way

im not 100% sure on this sugegstion but check out BT tbh. Im saying this becasue since they own everything and rent it to people like tiscali etc they get first dibs on everything. Plus any problem they are more likely to reply quicker with engineers as with tiscali i had to wait for them to contact BT and that took a few days.

Its a shame you cant get cable as I normally recommend that to anyone due to the cable network structure

EDIT: Got up to 8mb with Tiscali and get 7mb pure connection and like umm bout 3 to 4 mins by car away from my exchange.

As I had a tempting offer from my bank (£100 cashback to move to BT) I'm in the process of migrating over to BT so I'll let you know how I get on.

(Current status: sat at home waiting for courier to deliver box of bits. Can't configure current router to BT as the passwords and account details are in the box of bits. )

    Avoid:
    AOL
    Tiscali
    Orange
    Pipex/ Nildram
    TalkTalk

    Consider:

    Eclipse
    Zen

Also have a look at www.thinkbroadband.com and click "Compare" under Service Providers. Very useful.
