    Networking on a larger scale!!

Can anyone tell me the best networking managed switches and unmanaged switches preferbly 48port gigabit switches. There are roughly 20 machines in 10 various rooms and 2 rooms with 40 machines.

Also can anyone tell me the best wireless access point to use.

These are all for educational purporses.

    Thanks

    Tush

For workground switches I buy HP ProCurve (4108GL's rammed with 20 port 10/100/1000 do us very nicely) but for something a bit fancier (> Layer 2, OSPF and so on) I go for Cisco Catalysts, usually 3550-48's (which have been replaced by the 3560 series now) but they're only 10/100.

You need to think about how you're going to interconnect the switches, we cascade multiple 4108GL's together using the HP stacking kit to create a dirty great single logical switch.

If they aren't servers then there is little point having Gig connections to the desktop, sure take fibre back to the central switch but no way otherwise.

I'd definitely recommend the new 3560, just got a new one in and its worked so well. Spent ages long ago working with 3520 - 48's and they never missed a beat.

Cisco costs to purchase but i've never had a single issue and you'll find more support for cisco ios than most other switches if you have to do anything out of the ordinary with them.

Are you connecting the switches to anything btw?, internet etc. Do you know if you need layer 3 are you vlaning etc?.

I know some educational networks have to also fit into the schema of the larger LEA, have you checked this?
