    Broadband (without wires?)

I'm currently trying to sort out broadband access for a friend who's just moved in to rented accomodation in Hungerford.

I've done the usual first checks :
    - is it a cabled area? - NO
    - is there a BT line currently connected? - NO
    - does he have a mobile 3g pcmcia card? - NO (haha) - he also what's to purchase a laptop that needs to be capable of playing RomeTotal War - but that's another story.

I've told him to find out how much reconnecting the BT line would be and how long it would take - but has anyone else any ideas on mobile data (maybe 3g).

I looked at t-mobile stuff maybe 12 months or so ago for myself on my train commute, and at the time I think it was £18 a month (but I returned it as the coverage was poor). Looking round now for anything mobile based looks to be the wrong side of 30 quid a month (and relatively long contracts).

Anyone any ideas for BB access at his new location?

    Cheers,

3g is very expensive and not all areas have it, if not it will drop to GPRS.

It would be much better to get a BT line in, it takes about 10 days (even though they say 30) and then have it activated for ADSL. Simple

I worked for a company who had a contractors that used the 3G PCMCIA cards and they all hated them.

You could go for UK satellite broadband but that looks way expensive

If there's already a BT line, but it's just been disconnected, then this is definitely his bet bet.

I use GPRS on my mobile/laptop for work (no 3G here) and it's painfully slow - worse than plain old dialup. It's best used in emergencies only.

Cheers for the responses, it looks like BT is the way to go - they still seem to have a very strong monopoly in a lot of areas!!!

well they should, they did pay for the copper to be installed in most, if not all areas of the UK!
