    Transmission(Torrent client) on nslu2

Hi i am trying to instal and configure this package on my unlunng 6.8 fw. i
am a novice in linux and problem lies in editing the cgi file according to
the wiki. what i done is i copied the cgi file ino the
/home//httpd/http/cgi-bin and then i tranfered the cgi file into my laptop
using windows xp's "my network places" .

I then edited the cgi file according to the wiki but now when i try to
transfer it back to the nslu2 it says i cant has the disk might be write
protoected. i tried to do chmod 775 /home//httpd/http/cgi-bin and it still
the same. how can i transfer the newly created cgi file into the nslu2
    device? thanks in advance

first thing to do is check the path your putting.

    /home//httpd/http/cgi-bin

normally doesn't make a difference but in web applications /home//http/cgi-bin can be different to /home/http/cgi-bin

Second thing to do is check why it says the file system is read only.

The samba config your using to have your device shared appears to have read-only permissions to the directory your trying to write to.

This can be fixed in two ways.

Quick and dirty chmod the directory to 777 - then change it back to what ever it was before you started once the file is up. This is a quick and dirty fix and doesn't gurantee it will work as the problem could lie with access control on the networking sharing config,

Second: fix your network sharing(samba) config for the share/user permissions.

be very careful, openssh on an internet facing device can be very dangrous in terms of giving away access, but also opening another exploitable hole. Don't to this unless you are confident you can secure it, and you know what your doing.

I would echo Ikonia's warnings about openssh - I have it on an internet facing nachine - on a bad evening I have had over 12,000 attempts to hack into it. You should read the openssh manual carefully and set up a public/private key pair so that only the person with the private key can access the machine. It looks a little complicated at first, but read the openssh documentation carefully and it becomes straightforward. (I am on holiday at teh moment and not got the manuals with me, but I can walk you through it in a week or so - if you haven't managed it yourself) (I use that method - the private key is on my laptop - this is the only machine that will connect successfully using SSH!) Once you have got the public.private keys working, disable normal login - but DON'T LOSE THE KEY!

However once you have done that, it makes NSLU2 operations MUCH simpler! For example you can edit your cgi scripts in place using vi, so no need to worry about copying files backwards and forwards. And setting permissions on files is much easier.

I'd make a guess that how you have edited the file has corrupted it in some way.

I'm looking up this "transmission package" which appears to just be a name for samba on this device.

You may want to consider (just a thought) resetting the device back to default settings (take a note of any settings you like that work) and then re-inputting them. Anything you want to do then we can work through with you knowing exactly what state your in.

Also, could you post the wiki link your using, that way I can understand what your doing and way.
Don't panic though, all this should be recoverable.
