Unhappy Slow connection between PC and NAS device

    Hi all,

I have a PC (XP SP2) and an IcyBox NAS2000-B connected directly to my Netgear WGT624v3 Wireless router. In my mind when I'm transferring files between the PC and the NAS, it should be pretty damn rapid, but it ain't
Am I doing something wrong ? As I say, it's all directly connected via CAT5 at 100MB.......

I have no evidence of the speed between the 2, just that it is painfully slow.....if anyone can point me to some freeware utility that records file transfer speeds between devices, then I'd be more than happy to share the results of that with you.

    Any help gratefully received

Google for 'WAN Watch' which is a freebie Dumeter type application that'll show you the transfer rates you're getting.

    Hi

This site shows some benchmarking info for your NAS:

    http://www.hardware.info/en-US/produ...ox_IBNAS2000B/

Writes seem around 4MB/s and reads 5.9MB/s over the 100Mbit interface.

It actually looks faster connected to the USB! Writes 14MB/s and reads 29MB/s.

    You'd think wouldn't you?

Very few of these little NAS boxes have decent performance. If the picrture of the Icybox on that site is accurate, it is actually a QNap TS-101 or a variant of that. I have one, very slow, i don't use it any more.

The fastest ones are the 5 drive units, but then you do pay a lot more for them.

Hrrrm, thanks for the updates guys
Reckon I'll just use it to store photos, music and important files then rather than stream movies as that may well stutter as I d/l more and more HD content

    Thanks again
