Virgin Media problems

I am really annoyed with our connection. We have a 4 MB connection shared between 3 people with a wireless router. When only one person is on the connection is slow at best and downloads are around 150 kb/s max but when all 3 people are on it is pretty much unusable and I think something is up as surely when one person is on the downloads from fast servers should be at least over 300.

What problems could there be?
How do I fix them?
Are there any CABLE internet companies that provide a better service and how much do they charge for 4MB connection? It has to be a cable company as we don't have a phone line.

Do you get the same problem if you connect directly to the modem with a network cable?

Yes I do but to manage that we had to get a 30 metre cable so I can connect straight to the modem and it still is just as slow. Would the 30m of cable make a difference as surely it shouldn't?

Nope, it won't make any difference.

What are people doing with the connection? Is anyone using Bittorrent or any other peer to peer stuff?
