BE originally enabled - come to sign up and not enabled ...

I have recently just moved house in birmingham, the previous tennants had ADSL and I checked with their postcode and number that it was ADSL2+ enabled. However the new BT line has just been activated today so I rang up BE and they said the line could only support ADSL1 and they didn't have an enabling date.

Does anyone know why this might have happened. My postcode is B5 7PF for anyone that wants to check.

Apart from cable what other services provide extremely fast internet? I have looked into Zen's ADSL1 and they say I can only support upto 1Mbps!?! I'm in the centre of Birmingham

    Cheers Muchly

The exchange may be LLU'd, but that doesn't mean that it will have been Be who have done it. A quick check on samknows.com shows that Be isn't available but Easynet/Sky ADSL2+ is.

ADSL2+ is only enabled in exchanges (for now) when providers spend some money to put the necessary equipment in. When a provider does that they'll only let customers signing up to them use their ADSL2+ services.

The line could have been connected to a different exchange than what the checker expected.
Still weird though, most of Brum is ADSL2...

    From samknows.com:

28/03/2007 Sky/Easynet has enabled the Calthorpe exchange for their service
14/03/2007 BT Wholesale (SDSL) has enabled the Calthorpe exchange for their service
02/02/2007 Be Unlimited is no longer reporting an enablement date for the Calthorpe exchange
19/10/2006 BT have set a target date of Q3 2009 for the switch to 21CN for the Calthorpe exchange
16/08/2006 Bulldog has enabled the Calthorpe exchange for their service
03/08/2006 Be Unlimited has set an enablement date of 31/05/2007 for the Calthorpe exchange
20/05/2006 Bulldog has enabled the Calthorpe exchange for their service
17/05/2006 Bulldog has updated the enablement date for the Calthorpe exchange to 30/06/2006 (Was previously 31/07/2006)

Doesnt look too good on the BE front!

On the plus side from your postcode you are 440 metres away from the exchange so potentially you could get max(ish) speeds from regular ADSL or sky ADSL2+.

    Code:
    dslzoneuk.net/distance.php
    All the best.

The problem could be gaining access to the exchange in order to put their equipment in there so people can jump on their service, or simply not enough people in that area pre-registered to warrant spending the cash.

I had this, Mine went from Nov, to Dec and then to March - but come March and my exchange was enabled.

Cheers for that, unfortunately I already know about that and another code to get some free months - just was asking for a referral so the referee and myself could get another free month but I think this has been sorted now
