    Sky BB

Hi there, wow feels wired posting again.

Any way, I was just wondering if I could get anyones reactions to Sky BB. Might not be able to get Cable in the up and coming student house, and sky LLU is in my area and offers a good deal.

But ADSL2+ what are good routers for this unheard of concept in the back lanes of Cornwall. My Current linksys at home has gone tits up, and i'm currently useing a god awful USR router. Anything seems good. So are sky worth it? And is this: http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/produ...duct_uid=52244 okay.

I might go for the value option and get this: http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/produ...e=ZXh0ZW5kZWQ=

    Thumbs down Re: Sky BB

This is based on my friends experience

Be weary of the sales pitch.

    • False Speeds
    • False Claims
    • Bad Customer response times

This week and the last few weeks I have been speaking to a close friend of mine and he has had nothinmg but dropouts and slow connections.

He is on Sky BB Max £10 per month | 8-16 MB speeds. He is also very near to the exchange. BT have run tests on his line and there are no problems Sky have run tests and they see no problems with line. It seems to me that he is being throttled (many ISP do this). To offer a deal such as the above is pretty unsustainable as it offers unlimited access at speeds over 8MBit for a very cheap price.

I just finished writing a letter for him which asks to terminate the contract. From what I know, the Netgear modem in your link is what Sky supply. With the exception that Sky lock your settings.

    Re: Sky BB

It seems to be a real hit and miss experience. For those that it works for, it seems to work great but for those that have problems they have nothing but problems.

    I'd avoid it.

People said alot if the same things about Talk Talk tho' My sisters been with them since they introduced their free BB and never had a issue. The LLU in Exeter has only been there a few months, i'm tempted to take the plunge if we cant get cable and just see what happens. Living with a Law student any way

To make blanket statements like you have is just plain stupid.
I have SKY BB Max and have been very happy with it for the past 6 months.
If someone has a bad experience then does it make the entire service bad????? Of course not!

You will need to use Skys rebranded Netgear DG834GT. To access their service... unless you know how to hack their box?

No reason to hack the box to be truthful, unless your very competent with internet settings. the DG834 is a pretty good router in all fairness.

Out of interest - inside the first 12months or out? Just so i know when the craptacula netgear box kills itself. I've already had two phonecalls that go like this:

    "hello mum"
    "my internet's not working"
"how many lights are on the box?"
"can u pull out the power cable?"
    "which cable is that?"
"the one with the round connector"
    "ok done that"
"ok now pull out the phone line cable"
    "which cable is that?"
    [intermission]
"ok now plug the power cable in, and wait 2 mins then put the phone cable in"
    "oh it works"

Seems to be a common thing - i've seen/had at least 4 netgear boxes that resync/connect only when following the special procedure defined above. Wonderous.

    Re: Sky BB

Well I've set up Sky BB for the inlaws who live nearby. Was a simple process and they now receive 4.4mb/sec average on the Mid package (max speed 8mb/sec).

I would say they are no better or worse than anyone else. The router works well, they haven't had any problems with it.

Only problem is that they are over subscribed due to the massive take up of the offers they have been doing lately. My contract with Virgin Media ends this month and I called Sky to sign up to the max package and was told that I can't get it despite being on the same exchange and same distance from it as the in laws. Was told that I'd have to get the £17/month "connect" service which is upto 8mb/sec... I politely ended the call.

"Be" seems very good - lots of praise in other threads about them, but then they are more expensive.

Just wondered as they're simply oblidged inside 12 months - outside you'll need to threaten them for replacements (as you do with Sky boxes). Thanks for the info

    Re: Sky BB

Alot of people have bad lines in this day and age DSL MAX really brings them out as well. So D/C are hard to go by has knowing how good your line is, seen as BT set that up any way. Its when the ADSL light is on, but their is no internet that you need to worrie.

Any way, isnt Sky just ADSL2+ why would you need a hacked router? When I was looking on the site it didnt even sugest it came with one in the first place.

    Re: Sky BB

What I was trying to say was, that Sky Max does come with its own ADSL2+ router, the DG834GT. But if you want to run your own router then you would need to hack the Sky router to get some of the settings sky have pre-setup before you receive it.
