    Shared folder question

I share a house with a few other people. We have a cable internet connection and it is shared via a router (we have 1 port in each bedroom, use a switch for more connections).

Basically I want to set up a shared folder on each of the 2 PCs in my room that is only visable to and only accessable by the other PC in my room.

How would I go about this?

    Re: Shared folder question

a nice trick is to give the folder names a name ending with $ this will hide them

    eg prog$

although people can't see them (in an MS based OS) they can still access them if they know the direct name.

If you make the folder accessable only by your passworded administrator account and hide it with the $ then not only will they not be able to see it they wont be able to access it if they do some how find it.

    Re: Shared folder question

pc's will only be able to see it if they are on your local network (so as long as your router is secure, no one from the outside world will see it)

as jay says, make sure you password them so that even if someone did get access to it they will need a username/password.

One thing you could do for more security would be to uncheck 'allow users to change my files' that way they will only get read access to the folder

hit Add, then type in your username. then give all access to that username, and remove them from Everyone

note: requires same username/password on both machines

It also needs all the PCs to be on the same domain, with the user accounts set-up on the domain controller so that the user names have the same UIDs on all machines.

    Re: Shared folder question

XP home edition doesn't support domains (AFAIK) but should work with teh same workgroup. (In simple terms a domain controller allows such things as single sign on and other stuff too - only really applicable in large server/client set ups))

    Re: Shared folder question

ok setup the administrator account on both PCs with the same name and password (don't make the name administrator)

It will ask if you want to make the folders private, click yes.

Now add a folder inside the private folders and make it a share. This should now only be accessibe to the administrator account on that PC but becuase the other PC has the same name and password it too will be able to access the share.

that's what you WANT, unless you use domains, which you don't

set it up so it has credentials for the LOCAL user. you can then remotely authenticate as that user when mapping the network drive

    Re: Shared folder question

You could stick their local IPs, or even better their MAC addresses, into your firewall and block them, that way they'd see the shares but wouldn't be able to access it.
