    router issues

ok, my wireless router is a Belking 54g, and worked fine until recently, i have just got internet set up in my new house, and went to set up the wireless, it set up no problem, there are a couple of laptops using it and my desktop, its fine untill i start doing anything on the PC like updating AVG or something and then the wireless signal disappears, and the desktop and all the laptops are kicked off...

    any advice?

it think Im, gonna buy a new router, possibly, and reccomendations there...

i had looked at Netgear WNR854T

Sorry! Have a look at the Draytek 2910VG, the cable version. (not used one myself - I am on ADSL, but it is in the same series as the 2800)

That Draytek is one expensive router, far too much money for what you get....

I'd be looking at a GWART2-54125 / SWAMR-54125, they're bargain basement priced but they'll do pretty much everything you need them to do. They seem to be pretty well supported with third party firmware, so you can customise them to do all sorts.

But very capable, with lots of features and good support. Horses for courses.

But to go back to the original problem... What is the signal strength like in the new location? Have you tried resiting the router? Does it still happen if the laptops are adjacent to the router? Is there anything nearby (cordless phone etc) that could be causing interference?

    Re: router issues

The 2800VG isn't known for being the best wireless router out there tho (i've got one) and the draytek forums are full of complaints about that side of it. It's pretty good but it's probably a bit overpriced IMHO as someone who's had one for a fair old while. The previous series (2600?) was probably better overall and draytek are still trading off that reputation to some degree.
Don't get me wrong - it's a good router - but it's just not as compatible with different wireless chipsets as perhaps it could be (as compared to some other routers i've owned). YMMV.

    Re: router issues

Having used both 2800VG and 2910VG I can say the 2910VG is much better. The ADSL hardware in the 2800VG ain't great and the wireless hardware can be a little dodgy too. Which is a shame.

The latest firmware (2.8) has improved the ADSL side (now syncs in 20 seconds, as opposed to 20 minutes with the 2.5 version!) and added lots of desireable features.

However we getting OT - which was to help the OP solve his wireless problems (as well as give router recommends!)

Agreed - I've been using the 2910VG for almost 3 months now without a single problem. It may be on the more expensive side, but it's definitely worth it
