i had this problem with my friend when playing quake 3 on lan against him i could connect to his games but not him to mine
the way we fixed it was to get him to join the lobby first or he starts a game then quits just as i get into the lobby and start a game just try to join the lobby/game in different orders till you can see his game (this isnt really fixing the problem as we had to do this whole process over and over everytime we wanted to play so in the end we just gave up and played ut2003) i dunno bout the bf1942 one
sorry if this aint been much help but at least now you know it isnt just you who gets this

You shouldn't need IPX/SPX as both games run happily on TCP/IP.
What operating sytem do you run on the machines?
Do you have any problems sharing files between the PC's?
Can you ping the machines from one another?
Is your machine running a personal firewall?
You may also want to have a friendly mod move this into the networking forum - as it's more a networking question than a gaming one.

We are both running XP, We Share Files ALL the time, I think the sharing files means that we would be able to ping the machines and yes I have a firewall ....

I'd start by looking at the firewall - Is it just the standard XP one or zonething like Zonealarm?
