    BT Total Broadband Exposed....

Well ive been with them for just over a month and this is ****ing bull****.. I keep having to send them emails to their customer support telling them to put my internet speed back to normal. It seems there have some kind go fast and go slow buttons there because so far its been like this.
Why do you want to contact me on the telephone for so you can go through the same precedures as before? This has happened before in fact it was about 2 weeks ago and i spent ages talking to someone on the telehphone which made no difference to my speed and did not fix the problem i was told to do all the following stuff like reinstalling the modem drivers dissconnecting the the modem for ages making sure all the connections are properly connected and i really do not want to go through all that again. I have already said that this is not a problem with my computer or anything on my end but a problem with you BT playing about and messing stuff up. The only thing that got my internet speed back up was contacting you though email after about an hour after my 4th email to you guys 2 weeks ago my internet speed magicaly shot up to 3500Kbps and seeing as i didnt follow anything the last BT Tech person told me to do, its seems pretty clear that you have some kinda of go fast and go slow button.
3 Hours Later internet speed magically jumps from 480Kbps to 4100Kbps..... Yes very shocking..

BT Total Broadband ( BT say they will try and get the max line speed...... uh huh more like 512k ISDN Service )
    £24 Month
BT Took 3 Months Bills inadvance at the start of contract. BT has broken their own contract as they are clearly are not providing 8mb not 7mb or 6mb try 3mb if your lucky )

    8000Kbps = 8mb

    1st Connection = 240Kbps
6 Hours on email to BT Tech Support
    2nd Connection = 3700Kbps ........

    3 Days Later
    Connections Drops = 430Kbps
    More Emails...........
    3rd Connection = 3200Kbps .........
Req Dissconnections, Ports being Blocked, Cant Play some online games due to the homo hub blocking ports.
BT Homo Hub Removed & Destroyed in Garden with Crossbow

    6 Days Later
    Connection Drops = 480Kbps Again
Big Angry Insulting Email gets Sent to BT
    4th Connection = 3300Kbps .......

    4 Days Later
Woke up this morning ahhhhh 480Kbps again

It seems perfectly clear to me that BT are ****ing people over by playing throttle and limits on the broadband my quess is they do this all the time to see how many people dont notice the speed drop. Well i ****ing do and seeing as im supposed to be getting 8MB not even that as you can see 3000Kbps is about 3 meg. I can be ****ed with BT anymore im gonna cancel my contract from them and get my 3 months bills they took inadvance back from them. Wish me luck guys and if i was you id stay well away from BT at all means, im sending all my evidence to watchdog and trading stans etc see what they think...

    Re: BT Total Broadband Exposed....

I think its very unlikely that BT are deliberately throttling you, unless you are doing something to contravene the T&C's......

Having dealt with BT alot, it's more likely that some server/software mistake keeps automatically slowing you down, perhaps because of problems on your line? If you dont get your case escalated to a manager who will track the fault down, you will simply bounce from person to person. This can go on for ever with BT.

but yeah, you're probably well within your rights to cancel the contract and demand a return of money for unused days....

if i was you i would take screenshots of your connection rate everytime it drops... make sure you get the date in there too.

get a collection of 2-3 times then send that to them.'

    Re: BT Total Broadband Exposed....

Nar i serously think they are playing about i cant see how a problem just magically fixes itself after i send a crazy email to bt customer support saying i know what your doing to the speeds. Also i had a friend whos a engineer pop round last week he tested my lines with all his fancy gear and he said theres nothing wrong with them one bit.

    Its serously been like

Slow Speed > Email BT > Speed Faster > Few days later > Slow Speed > Email BT > Speeds Faster > Few more days later speeds slow again > Email > Speeds back to normal.....

Thats not a problem, thats BT playing games with people speeds, why you may ask its simple think how many people they can rip ff from the people who are not aware of the speeds or know how to read them. When someone compains they quickly think "oww **** someones knows what we doing better put them back to normal"

Like funnelhead said. I think this has more to do with problematic profiles for your line as opposed to BT employing underhand tactics here.

    Re: BT Total Broadband Exposed....

If i had problems on my line why i go from 2 years of having uk online 4mb without problems to BT 8MB to mass problems. Its the same phone line lol they replaced the outside phone like about 3 years ago when the telegraph pole got hit by a van. New cables all over the house, New modem, New Telegraph Pole.... And to mention i was with UK Online before never had a single speed problem i was on about 3000Kbps and yet BT cant even do 4000Kbps on their 8mb thats not 8mb its more like 2000-3000Kbps when they arnt pressing buttons marked slow med & fast.

Well ive asked to cancel my account and im gonna see if i can go back to Uk Online as they were far more realible.

    Re: BT Total Broadband Exposed....

8mb ADSL in the UK isn't really 8mb, it's 8mb MAX. The product is ADSL MAX.

It negotiates to the maximum your line can handle.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ADSL_Max
    http://www.thinkbroadband.com/faq/sections/radsl.html

So if you change ISP, you aren't suddenly going to get 8mb, as yourline clearly can't handle it

Yeh i know the 8mb **** isnt gonna be 8mb and i agree thats there gonna try max speed etc but its not reallly try because its more like a set speed for BT ive never got over 3200Kbps on BT (8mb) but i got 3900Kbps on ukonline (4mb) once for a good few months.

    Re: BT Total Broadband Exposed....

I would think that a faulty speed profile is being applied to your line

you complain and a 1st line support tech goes "oh yeah that's wrong, ill turn up the speed"

2 days later the faulty profile/software/whatever thinks there is a problem with your line and slows it down again.

    you complain

    LOOP

What you need is to get your case escaleted so that a manager tracks down the faulty software/profile/whatever, Rather than just manually putting the speed up and walking away. I think the only way to get your case taken seriously is to get evidence that you can send to BT i.e shots of your connection rate/ line noise at both fast & slow states.

Even going by your version of events -WHY would BT keep trying to "secretly turn your speed down" when it's clear that you have indeed "noticed"

Also, secretly throttling people all the time would have little benefit to BT, as 80% of broadband goes unused during the day. If BT were going to be underhand, they'd just cap people at the prime 5-8 slot.

    If you do leave BT,
    Do you think when Jesus comes back..... he ever wants to see another cross.......? *{God bless you Bill}

    Re: BT Total Broadband Exposed....

Maybe something between you and the net is only capable of the slower speed, so when they try and force it up to a high rate it's unstable and negotiates it way to a slower rate.

Remember the good old 56k days? I could force my modem to connect at 52k and stop it from negotiating down the rate, but it just wouldn't work. Leave it at 48k and it was fine.

    Re: BT Total Broadband Exposed....

Jimbouk is quite correct in what he says. There could be something in you premises which is causing your bb to settle at a slow speed. Even if there is not , if BT are resetting your BRAS ' then it will prob take about 3-5 days to settle (because it is MAX). One day you may get 500k next day you may get 5 meg , you just have to have patience till it settles . If your line can only sustain 3-4 meg then that is all you will get.

I had exactly same problem with BT , every few month speed drops down from around 4mbits to 500-800kbits. So I did complain. Every time few days after speed came back to around 4. After my year contract has come to end I joined adsl24. No problems now, speed is solid, even during peak time.
BT used to have download limits on every package - but decided to give package 3 unlimited - since than it get worse. They started to shape traffic. Even youtube was loading slow. No more BT for me, no thank you.
Just something silly to ask, Optical are you connected to main telephone socket?

    Re: BT Total Broadband Exposed....

I had a good service from BT but then the service stopped and I was then continuously patched through to people on in Asia reading from FAQs for 8 weeks.

After having enough I decided to cancel my subscription... it took me 6 HOURS on the phone (across 2 nights) to have them cancel my subscription. All I got was some jumped up little toerags saying - "we're really sorry for all this trouble I guarantee you're getting put through now.....!"

BT are a real bunch of gits and I wouldn't use any of their broadband services again. If you can't equip your tech support with people who a) speak english and b) know what the hell they're talking about, don't off the service in the first place.

    Re: BT Total Broadband Exposed....

I went through three months of sheer hell with BT trying to get them to fix a stuck BRAS profile on my line. The customer service is terrible - even when you know what's wrong with your line it's almost impossible to talk to someone who knows anything about ADSL. In the end i got mine sorted but i spent hours on the phone to gentlemen of an indian persuasion, being told that they'd sort the problem (and they don't) and finally finding the one bloke at BT who knew what I was saying and made the magical change.

I'm still with them, my contract is now just ended, as it works ok now with mild throttling in the evenings during the week (when i don't really use it) down to 70k/sec from ~840k/sec. They were throttling down to 30k/sec at one point and i did consider leaving them as surfing alone was painful (and the missue complained). I'm on their business product and need very high or unlimited use - so moving to another company will increase my costs significantly (from 35ukp to 60ukp or so).

BT are a real bunch of gits and I wouldn't use any of their broadband services again. If you can't equip your tech support with people who a) speak english and b) know what the hell they're talking about, don't off the service in the first place.
Yeah sounds about right. I've always found BT are most effective when threatened with termination of contract. Tell one of their muppets you want a manager to call you back immediately, throw in the words "Watchdog" or "Ofcom" and they'll soon start singing to your hymnsheet.
