Lightbulb Lock it all down! What software to use

    Hi all

Finally getting some broadband hooked up at my flat (Newnet) and I'm just looking for recommendations of free software to help keep my extremely precious PC and files secure.

So what do you use and recommend? I'm looking for virus killers, spyware stoppers, firewalls (although I'm using a Netgear DG834G router which I think has a hardware firewall too)... what else?

I've had some good experience of AVG, I know Spybot is meant to be good, I've read of ZoneAlarm - go on, please tell me what you've got running! Free, low demand on PC resources and effective - go!

Re: Lock it all down! What software to use

    Antivirus:

    free and good:
    Avast!
    AVG
    Cheapish, very good:
    Nod32
    Kaspersky

    Firewalls
    Zone alarm
    Comodo

    Spyware
    AVG anti-spyware
    AD-Aware
    Spybot S&D

Most of the above are Very good protection and should keep you covered. Many of the free versions are just as good as the ones that you have to buy, so it is really up to you wether you think you need the extra options/security that they might offer. as a note on the spyware, the AVG one is probably the best option as i think it scans for spyware in real time, like an antivirus does, rather than needing to wait for you to run a scan.

    im using:

    Avast!
    windows firewall
    AVG anti spyware

Dont bother with a software firewall ,just use the routers firewall. I had that router and it did an exxcellent job.

    Any linux distro prperly configured!

Holwever as a start on a windows system, don't routinely run everyday tasks as admin - create a lower prilige account for user tasks.

Use NAT on the router. Ensure all inbound ports are closed (should be by default) unless you are running a server that ypou want open to the internet.

If files are that precious, use some form of per file encryption. Back them up offline regularly.

Don't open suspect e mails, and be wary where you browse

    Don't use preview on Outlook.

Use Firefox in preference to IE

Install Frprot/AVG or one of the other reecommended tools as a failsafe should a virus get through in spite of the above precautions.

keep your windows up to date, use a nice AV like NOD32, NAT NAT NAT! but my best advice is just don't click on suspect links. If you use the internet correctly you should be A OK.
