Hmmm, ADSL connection issue...

Ok, so Im with Orange for my broadband (its only £5 so i cant really complain), however since moving house iv been having two issues with my broadband...

Firstly Orange swear blind that Im getting 4mb bb, however according to my router (netgear dg834n) im only actually getting 2.3mb.....spead was around 2.9mb for a couple of weeks after I moved in, then plumetted...... wheres this extra mythical speed being lost? and is there any app i can run to find detailed specs on my line quality etc?
Atm im running the netgear supplied microfilter to the dg834n via a short run (about 30cm) of high quality cable, then from the router to my main rig via 10m of cat5 cable....

Second issue is that everytime a telephone call is answered my broadband connection is disconnected (but reconnects whilst the call is still going), and when the call ends the bb dies again and reconnects....
*edit* Forgot to add that the telephone is connected downstairs WITHOUT a microfilter to the main telephone socket, and the router is upstairs on a preinstalled extensions socket.... does the main phone just need a splitter?

any ideas folks?

Can you check in your router what the attenuation and SNR (signal to noise ratio) is for the downstream part of your line? There should be an option somewhere in the web management of the router to check but I can't remember where it is.

As for the filters, yep, you need one on the main phone point. Infact you need one on any phone point that has a phone plugged into it.

Re: Hmmm, ADSL connection issue...

Head on over to www.speedtest.net that will give you a general idea of how fast your connection is running. Your drop in speed maybe because recently Orange have been running tests with live TV streams over the internet as hae many other ISP's of late, I'm with Pipex and for a few weeks my connection was a lot slower but with in the last few days my speeds have come back up again.

Secondly, yes get a filter put on your phone, thats why your internet is cutting out when you use it, every phone needs to be filtered otherwise your going to get this problem.

I don't see the point in doing a speedtest if the router is only syncing at 2.3Mbit or so. I'm not a fan of speed test sites anyway, I've seen wildly varying figures when using them so I always do a big download from a fasr http or ftp server.

Re: Hmmm, ADSL connection issue...

Right, iv added a micro filter to the downstairs line, and now no more disconnects with phone calls....

However, since connectingthe 2nd microfilter my router now shows a net connection speed of 6.8mb [MUCH BETTER ]....but speedtests and downloading from a fast ftp show my download speed is still only 200kbs (around 1.6mbs), before adding the filter the router showed 2.3mb and download speeds were around 240kbs....

Heres what the router says -

Port ------ Status ------ TxPkts ------ RxPkts ------ Collisions ------ Tx B/s ------ Rx B/s ------ Up Time
WAN ----- PPPoE ------- 2113 ------- 3451 --------- 0 --------------- 179 --------- 3082 ------ 00:23:44
LAN ------ 10M/100M -- 4062 ------- 2586 --------- 0 --------------- 2025 -------- 158 -------- 00:39:13
WLAN ---- 270M -------- 134 --------- 36 ----------- 0 --------------- 16 ------------ 1 --------- 00:39:06

ADSL Link ------------ Downstream ------ Upstream
Connection Speed ------ 6880 kbps ------ 448 kbps
Line Attenuation -------- 50.0 db --------- 27.0 db
Noise Margin ------------ 5.9 db ---------- 20.0 db

Anybody decipher that lot for me? Should I move the router downstairs to what i assume is the primary phone socket rather than using the upstairs extension socket? means il have to dig out my wireless card for my main rig, as the mrs will never let me run cat5 throught the house, but if having the box upstairs is really cutting speed from 6.8mb to 1.6mb.....

Gah! any help is very much appreciated!

Re: Hmmm, ADSL connection issue...

You may get a better sync rate with the router being at the master socket, you may not. Give it a try and see The theory is that you'd get less attenuation on the line which could allow a better sync rate but the limiting factor is the SNR - a low SNR (yours is about on the limit but should be fine) can mean disconnections and instability.

I'm a bit rusty on this, but you may need to call you ISP and tell them that you're getting a 6.8Mbit sync rate but only circa 2Mbit throughout. They can raise a ticket with BT to get your BRAS profile reset. Or alternatively you may find that it magically sorts itself in a few days - it has been a year or so since I worked with MaxDSL.

Re: Hmmm, ADSL connection issue...

Your up time is quite low - is the router maintaining the same sync rate for long periods of time? If not, you may find that your BRAS profile is being set lower than the rate you've posted because your line isn't stable enough to support it. You _should_ be getting 6Mbps with that sync rate, but if your line is constantly retraining (i.e. the rate keeps dropping) then you'll get far less. See this page for an explaination (and a table showing the BRAS rates) http://www.thinkbroadband.com/faq/sections/radsl.html Note: "A simple rule applies, if your line sync speed drops to a lower value the download speeds will adjust immediately, but download speeds will only rise if the line sync speed remains stable for 3 days."

You can see what your BRAS is set to on http://www.speedtester.bt.com/ which also runs a speed test on your line.

EDIT: according to http://www2.farina1.com/ADSL/default.aspx
You should be getting 6Mbps with those line stats - so it's either a stuck BRAS or low uptime that's the problem.

Re: Hmmm, ADSL connection issue...

Okies, well the low up time is due to rebooting the router after adding the extra filter downstairs - I thought the 6.8mb was an error, so I rebooted uptime prior to that was constant since I moved in (about 3 weeks). and before I moved house the router had been up with no restarts, reboots or lost connections for over 6 months

*edit*
right after touching NOTHING, my router is still reading 6.8mb, BUT my actual download speed is now around 500kbs and speedtests measure around 4.5mb.... wtf is happening - Orange say they havent touched anything and arent testing/checking/updating anything...?

Re: Hmmm, ADSL connection issue...

Im having very Very similar problems too with my AOL connectioni can remember what im on lol as i dont have/want the software installed I think its gold, but im not sure as that was dropped by AOL but i think its supposed to be 4MB now as it was upgraded or something. sometimes its running slowly (i just ran speedtest @2.8mb) but it doesnt bother me too much. Im bothered by the frequent dissconnects. Mainly due to the phone ringing. I only use one phone socket in the house which is like:

socket - extension - filter -< phone/broadband

somone suggested that i should put a filter in between the socket and extension as well as the other filter too but i dont see how it would make a difference, but i tried it and the modem would connect to the internet after that. I need to buy a long CAT5 cable i think to run it like:

socket - filter < broadband(cat5 to PC)/ ----------extension--- phone

would that solve it? It may also be because of the wirerless phne that we use too although i have tried many different modem freq's and its all the same. im thinking moving it away in the setup above may help the problem.

The other thing that is annoying is the Lag spikes im getting in CSS, ive treid nearly everything in game by adjusting Rates and interp following http://www.fishtankclan.com/e107_plu...php?content.44 so im thinking the problems elsewhere.

anyway heres some modem info that was asked for like above:

Speed Test:
@16:40 2.87MB
@19:42 2.93Mb

BT test (BRAS one):
Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
IP profile for your line is - 3000 kbps
DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 4640 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 2690 kbps

My test:
Downloading bioshock demo 70ish KB/PS (brother playing WoW too at same time)

uptime:
System Up Time 51:42:02

Port ----Status ------TxPkts ----RxPkts ----Collisions ---Tx B/s ----Rx B/s-- Up Time
WAN ---PPPoE ------129072 ---163836 -----0 -----------390 ------3871 ---07:58:15
LAN ----10M/100M -322879 ---289132 -----0 -----------600 ------156 -----51:41:58
WLAN --11M/54M --1652831 --1673273 ---0 -----------4735 -----702 ----51:13:16

ADSL Link -------------Downstream----- Upstream
Connection Speed ----4640 kbps -------448 kbps
Line Attenuation ------45 db ------------14 db
Noise Margin -----------5 db -------------20 db

On that BRAS test is "IP profile for your line" the speeds i should be achiving? if so i think my parents are being way overcharged i thinks its something like £20/mo

Thanks, sorry for the thread hijack, but it seems pointless starting a new one when im having similar if not the same problems, please proiritise vrykyl if he need the help

Connection seems to have settled at 700kbs actual download speed now...wil see how long they last. Its a pretty massive speed boost for adding one extra microfilter!!
