    Best ISP

    Hello,

I've just left Onetel AKA Talk Talk since they randomly decided to cut off our phone line so we thought we may aswell leave them alltogether and search for another ISP.

Rushed into it really so went for Virgin Media as i had seen all their new ads for their "Super-Duper Fast Non-Cable Broadband!"

    Oh dear..

    I was shocked..

Paid for the Unlimited 8Mb/s package and this is actually the first day i've had it and it's like i'm back onto a 56kb/s connection.

Speedtest.net was showing me a downstream speed of 62Kb/s and an upstream of 126kb/s.

I'm now wanting to make a move to another ISP but one that's reliable and has an unlimited download usage, i know there's alot out there but i've heard good and bad, just wondering if you guys had any recomendations.

    Thanks,
    Iain.

    Re: Best ISP

Really depends when you say "unlimited" how much you actually expect to use? At home I use ADSL24 (an EntaNet reseller):

    £19.99/month = 30GB Peak / 300GB Off-Peak Usage
    £29.99/month = 60GB Peak / 330GB Off-Peak Usage

If you want more than that, unless you're in an LLU or Be/Sky enabled area you can expect to pay a lot for an true unlimited "BT based" isp... at work we used Zen 8MB Unlimited but it costs £79.99 a month.

    Re: Best ISP

I am on BE unlimited, they offer an 'up to' 24MB service with no monthly limits for £24, they have now started offering a new package which offers 'up to' 8MB and no monthly limits for £14. I have the first package mentioned and get about 22MB and have been extremely happy with the service over the past 2 months since joining.

    Re: Best ISP

Must admit that I was going to join BE Unlimited. However, ended up with Zen as BE still has not enabled my exchange. They where ment to enable it back in July, then Aug now it is down to be enabled in Nov.

However, I've not had a problem with Zen. OK it is capped at 20GB per month for about £24 (I think that is want I'm paying can't remember). However, if you are not doing P2P stuff then this is plenty.

    Re: Best ISP

The speed issue surely is a line attenuation issue ?? When we upgraded from 2 meg service to 8 meg with pipex we were told that we needed to turn our router switched off over night so that when we turned it on the next day t would sek out the fastest speed available.

It took a couple of days of this and we reached an 8 meg connection

    Might be worth a try.

I originally thought that, well hoped for that that but it seems that this is what will happen due to them not being able to guarantee a stable connection during peak times..

Under 100k is a bit ridiculous though..

I've been looking into Demon who do some pretty decent packages,

    Anyone tried them?

Package i'm looking into is http://www.demon.net/demon/products/...chnical%20info

    Thanks for your replies,

I vote Be also. I'm on them here is Glasgow, don't quite get 22mb, more like 15, but they really are rock solid. No limits is very true to form, I've used ALOT of bandwith at times.

how much do you need man?

I still dont get my head around this mammoth useage people seem to need?
I have NEVER hit 20gig, and thats working at home, VPN'ing, gaming, building PC's and updating them, downloading drivers, Skyping, etc.

20 gig is VAST!!!! It's multiple DVD's worth....

I just don't see it ...I really dont

I'm with you Zak - I've gone over 4Gb for the first time this month (wifey has found 4OD TV!) and really can't see how people can DL sooo much data.

If you're using 40Gb plus then perhaps you should get out more and enjoy life

    Re: Best ISP

    I download a fair bit..

The reason for me going for unlimited is mainly because some months i'll download more than others and if i was to go over i know that some companies charge a fair bit for extra GB allowance.

I'ld say on average i dowload around a couple of GB a day... I just leave torrents to do thier thing whilst i'm asleep/working.

That's the reason for the unlimited usage, plus there's the freedom

    Re: Best ISP

Another vote for Be as well

Only downside is the BE router has a tendancy to fall over when too many TCP/IP connections are open and when the wireless is on it gets a little 'hot hot hot' as well.

Recently switched to Be and was overwhelmed by their support. Night and day compared to other ISPs.

As for Demon, no idea what they are like recently but a few years ago they went downhill rather fast.

ADSL 24 are good. I use them and if you organise your downloading for off peak you get 300gb a month in that time. The package is £19.99 a month and you get 30gb peak. 1 month contract too.
