does it just install like an OS?? or does it need linux or somethink running under it?? - if so will Knopix do? (cos thats what i've got - and download is slow on only 128k)

    thanks so far daniel

p.s. after a busy day and being late for a meting my mum forgot that she was bring back the PC - so i havent got it yet!!)

Once you've downloaded the ISO, you'll need to burn it to CD.
You then need to install the clark Connect monitor program on a windows machine - this gives you the option of creating boot disks for the new machine.
One boot disks are created, boot from them, insert CD and away you go.

IS the CD not bootable? SMoothwall CD's have always been bootable. Just go into your bios and set the first bood device to CDROM and you should be sorted.

YEAH - thats what i though

    - or you can put into another pc(windows or linux) on the network, bung the install floppy (that can be downloaded) into the machine and install it over the network (only surposts about 15-20 nics tho)

    also

    - i have BT midband (home highway with Bt ISP) and i would like this to be avalable to the two Pc this server will be serving.

    should i
    A) get an ISDN router/hub and do it that way or

    B) get USB extenion cable and plug midband into the file server, and the ICS it. (whould this even work - cos i dont think BT to linux drives )

bearing im mind it will have to allow MSN, win MX, Unreal tounament, etc etc the acces the net untouched

    thanks agin daniel

yeah its what I thought too But no, you have to make the floppy boot disks.

You may find that Clarkconnect is able to see the midband modem, thus allowing it to act as a firewall/router on top of the file server.

    right - is that ok

    - I just my dad is banging on about of we (you) shouldn't have you file server acting a firewall - because it defeats the whole "firewall pc protects data" etc (not that we hav any thing A) woth nicking B) that we mind get nicked etc)

if they can get past the firewall, they're onto your network. It wouldn't matter if the file server was on a different machine, they'd STILL be able to access it.

The whole idea is that you set the firewall up to STOP them getting in in the first place

    Well m8 i used smoothwall on a Gateway 2000 P1-100 / 16MB Ram / 300MB Hard disk, and that booted off CDROM.

Certain old machines are not as incompatable as many think, EG this P100 is ATX form factor, can boot of CD, etc even tho its old.
