    Cable & Phone exchanges

Quick one here. I've just moved house, and its to the northern most point of Hemel (No jokes please!) a friend who lives nearby has BB though phone lines and due to the distance to the exchange, has very poor performance.

So i thought that my other choice was cable. Virgin seem to be the only other provider for this but does cable subject to the same form of throughput deterioration as distance increases? Or are you meant to get the quoted speeds?

Virgin dont do an 8meg package so its gong to be 4meg (which is borderline for what i want) and their 20meg deal is way too much. But if i know that i will get near to the 4meg deal then I will go with that...

its all optical until the box that sits in the street divvying up the contention. ADSL gives you copper all the way to the exchange. Its subject so some signal degradation, but its miniscule.

Cable is bit more tollerant against signal deterioration because the way the cable is made and signal is encoded. As well as the optical backbone it's based on.
