    Which ISP?

What's a good ISP for dial-up these days? It won't be used much - it's for a relative. They're currently with Supanet but it isn't very good and looking at their bill it seems to be charging over 2p a minute during the weekends. I've looked at BTOpenworld and they seem to require Caller ID (at a fee) before you even begin using it. Is that normal these days? They just want something that's fast and reliable - and cheap! Any ideas?

    Re: Which ISP?

You can get caller ID for free if you sign up to one of the BT privacy options (you can probably finf details on the BT website). However I am surprised, most dial up ISPs only require CLI (Caller line identify) which is the calling number sending that number to the recipient, which is automatic unless you request not to (this is the service you access with 1471 and if you have/suscribe to caller ID)

The reason ISPs use this is for authentication purposes, so any dial up ISP will use that. Zen offer dial up, but in common with most ISPs, this uses an 0845 number. (The ISP gets a cut of this fee, which is how they make their money). You will need to check with the phonre sevice provider (BT?) how much that will cost. Compuserve do (or used to) offer an 0800 number, but fort a monthly subscription (used to be arounf £5.00/month, but only for 5 hours a month). AOL (who took over compuserve) may do something similar)

If the relative uses talk talk you may get a better deal if they have a dial up service, or their 0845 charges mmay be lower, but you will need to research this.

Depending on useage, a pay-as-you-go broadband connection might be cheaper, a google search will help.

    Re: Which ISP?

Thanks for the replies. Unfortunately they don't have any other cable / sky services. They're making do with dial-up for now but *may* get broadband in the future. It's just a case of value for money. They don't want to pay £10 a month if they're only using it a few hours a month.

Anyway, back to the initial question. They currently have the 'caller witheld' option on their line and I thought this would pose a problem. I was also getting confused with 'Caller ID' and 'Caller Display' (which you have to pay for). However, it looks like you can prefix the ISP number with 1470 which ensures that caller ID is sent when dialling out. I should be able to use most ISP's if this works. BT have instructions here if it's useful to anyone:

I suppose BTOpenworld / BT Yahoo (or whatever it's called now) can be given ago unless anybody has other suggestions.
