New Virgin Customer - Cable Modem Options

    Hiya,

Due to where I'm living, Virgin cable seems to be the only option that I have. I've jsut ordered it yesterday and it means that I need to get a decent wireless cable router. I haven really done much research into this as previously, I've always been on ADSL. The only one I've ever looked into was a Linksys one (WRT54G IIRC) for my brother in law.

I dont need anything too amazing, just one that has standard options for wireless security etc. Main concerns are that it needs to be reliable - doesnt reboot often, die after too many connections, that sort of thing... and also that it should have a good wireless range. Any recommendations - dont really want to spend £90-£100 but there should be some decent options out there for the budget conscious....

Can i have opinions about these?

    Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 High Gain

    Buffalo WHRG54S

    Belkin MIMO + USB

Those seem to be pretty good - anyone know much about buffalo - I know they are good in Japan but any problems with those? I dont particularly like any of the new Linksys ones - they seem very light and plasticky and look like thay would overheat.

But any opinions appreciated really as I'm looking to get this fast so that i can have it for Friday if possible.

    Thanks

    JP

Re: New Virgin Customer - Cable Modem Options

    Hi there

Ive got the WHRHPG54 running Virgin 4Mb cable and its brilliant. Ive had a number of other routers, a d-link which broke and a linksys which broke. Ive had the buffalo 6 months now and not a single problem. It has to be said that the installation was not quite as straightforward as the linksys but still if you have any previous router experience setup should be easy. But in terms of signal all five of my computers get very good signal even through a couple of floors and stuff that could cause interference. And the internet runs very quickly even when all the machines are accessing it.

I use the WRT54G on my 20meg VM Cable. Its pretty good and I have only had to reboot about 2 times in the past 2 and a half years. I can't remeber the last time I had no internet or no wireless signal due to this router, its rock solid.

Re: New Virgin Customer - Cable Modem Options

I wasnt impressed with the newer linksys ones (the silver ones) ever since having a bad experience with one (and its replacement) that i bought. I keep wanting to buy one of the older WRTs as they seem pretty reliable - but there seem to be loads of versions now!!

Ebuyer doesnt seem to have the Buffalo High Gain in stock and the only place that i can find so far that has it is Amazon, for £40...

May plump for that - but jsut spoke to my network admin and he has a netgear for about £10 that i could use for a bit (Or maybe for keeps if its any good). But the Buffalo HG looks like a good option.

Any more opinions would be great

This man speaks the truth, for the price these days they're a bargain. Flash them with DD-WRT or Tomato and get some nice extra features normally not available on a sub £35 router.
