    Syncing and Real Speeds

I'm with Be and am happy with the speed although we are paying for 24mb (but we cant have a 12 month contract hence us going for the more expensive option). Anyway the router syncs at 14000, and we get a very consistent 3500kbps when we test using speedtest.net

Is there anyway in getting our speed up a bit using the provided Speedtouch 780 to get it closer to the sync speed.

This is the info provided by the router:
    Up/Down: 1,334 / 15,360
    Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 13.5 / 27.5
    SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 7.0 / 8.5

Any help would be gladly appreciated. I'm not complaining about the 3.5mb we seem to be getting as it is rock solid and hasn't dropped once, nor has it deviated, no matter what time we have tested it. Just wondering whether we can get a little more juice out of it

    Thanks in anticipation

    Ian

    Re: Syncing and Real Speeds

speedtest.net and many other speed testing web sites are not all that accurate. I find the best way to test my speed is to download an iso from ubuntu, i am with Be and sync @ 22Mbps, i can usually download from ubuntu at 2.2MB/s. When i have checked speedtest it syas my speed is about 15Mbps and if that were the case i would not be downloading at thos speeds. I would say that you could try using the DMT tool to alter the SNR margin, currently at 8.5 you could happily go to about 4, by default mine is 6. I think you could also raise a ticket with Be requesting that you be put onto fastpath which whould show an increase in speed, it boosted me by 2Mbps

    Re: Syncing and Real Speeds

Does that cost anything to request to be put on a fastpath? And how do I edit the SNR margin (what do I do to the numbers [and to how do I do that])?

Download I get about 400/500kbps on some files from reliable sources, which ties in accurately with the 3/4mb service speedtest is coming up with. There is a ratio that relates the actual speed and the downloading speed; i.e. 512kb broadband you would always get 60kbps downloading (so the ratio is around 8 - 9).

    Cheers

    Re: Syncing and Real Speeds

So your router is syncing at 15360 and you're only getting about 3.5Mbit real throughout? Give Be a call and get them to open a ticket, something is definately awry there.

    Re: Syncing and Real Speeds

I have done, just awaiting a response from them. Though to be fair to have a rock solid 3.5meg connection is still nice. Tho if we can get 8meg plus that would be fantastic

Lets see what we can get

    Ian

PS. Only problem is the rest of the students will be back in Durham this weekend and that is when the exchange gets hit hard, you really feel the speed change (well we did last year) over the holidays etc.

    Re: Syncing and Real Speeds

Fastpath is free, just open a ticket and it will be done for you.
If you are syncing @ 15Mbps then your dowload speed should roughly be 1.5MBs.

Remember sync speed is Mega bits whereas your download speed is shown in Mega bytes, it works out as 8 bits for 1 byte. So yes your 500KBs is right if you are connected at 4Mbps (8:1 ratio). Although i sync at 22Mbps but download @ 2.2MB/s which is 10:1.

Anyway download this to check and alter your modem settings. If you need help using it just let me know.

    Re: Syncing and Real Speeds

are you on wireless or wired muddyfox? with wireless all speed testers gave me unrealistically low (about 3Mbit) result, even though i could use a download manager and get a steady 2MB easy, until i used TCP optimizer http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php, it now reports a much more accurate 18.5Mbit (i synch at about 22.5 using a netgear N router)

after doing that, http://dmt.mhilfe.de/ get DMT from there, and using http://www.dontbethere.co.uk/forum/d...px?f=5&m=16219 this thread, adjust your SN margin (down) from the 8.5 it is now to around 6... that will still give you a stable connection and add a touch of speed, probably around another meg, which is not to be sniffed at.

and of course you can send a ticket to Be asking to be moved to fastpath, which will help.. but d that as a last resort, as thats not going to solve the 3.5meg problem.

    Re: Syncing and Real Speeds

    ok awesome, cheers for that.
syncing at 12mb, when i ran the test via my macbook (wired) it got 13000kbps. so i think that is where the problem lies. Time for some wires me thinks
Best place to buy 10 and 20m patch cables from?

This is latest response I got from Be (they had obviously sent it to someone else as it had their name on the top)

Keep in mind that the actual throughput you can expect should be around 20% less then the actual sync rate because of the framing-overhead .

Please ensure that you have run adware and spyware programs on your PC. Also run a complete virus check on your system to eliminate the possibility of an infection slowing things down.

You can try altering the system memory settings to resolve this problem. Please follow these steps to do the change and update on the connection speed status.
1>Click Start, click Run, and then type sysdm.cpl
    in the Open box
2>Click the Advanced tab, and then click Settings under Performance
3>Click the Advanced tab, and then use one of the following methods under Memory usage
4>Select System cache and restart the computer for the changes to take affect.

Please update while testing the speed on http://download.bethere.co.uk/downloadMeter.html

Also make sure you are connected via Ethernet cable and not WIFI and there is no another equipment connected to the line

Please check your LAN card settings and adjust them for performance to A¿A¿throughputA¿A¿ instead of CPU.

    1. From Control panel open the Network connection window.
    2. Select your connection and right click for dropdown menu then choose Properties.

    3. The firs thing you see is Connecting using: and there you should have the name of the card you are using , so press the Configure button against it.
    4. Then select the Advanced tab and there you should have different services for the card. Select
Ethernet@WireSpeed and enable it or look for Optimal settings for Lan card --then set this to throughput.

Also Please carry out a new speed test by using this link:
    http://download.bethere.co.uk/downloadMeter.html

You can also download an TCP Optimizer to help you improve the speed as many members have written in the forums that it helps.

not necessarily, try running TCP optimizer on your wireless before you start faffing around with buying stuff

ive got it running, do I need to edit any of the settings (or just use optimal?), i.e. change the slider or anything? plus does it need to stay open for the settings to still be enabled or can it be closed down?

    Re: Syncing and Real Speeds

Well it works using the "optimal settings" and I get numbers which are around the syncing speed, i.e. 12000kbps
Though downloading some files (from the same servers) the "download" speed is the same, so does this program make a tangible difference or does it use tricks to find the download speed to the router and not to the pc/network adapter?
But at least it makes a difference for normal browsing, I'll keep you informed as to whether we find any improvements downloading etc

    Cheers
