Threat from ISP regarding unsolicited email. Eh?

I just received an email from my ISP (UKFSN) saying that unsolicited email has been sent from my IP address.
A threat of blocking my connection was given.

Is there anything I can do about it? I certainly do not send any spam email ..in fact i hardly ever send emails at all!

I phoned them and all they could say was to run all the adware, spybot, antivirus programs etc....which i have.

    Thanks for any suggestions, Roo

it is likely the mails had forged headers so they look like they are coming from your address but infact are coming form some server in eastern Europe or the far east

Is yours the only machine connected to the network ?

do you run a wireless network ? is it encrypted with at least WPA-PSK ?

Re: Threat from ISP regarding unsolicited email. Eh?

Hi i have a wired network..only me and my brother use it. I am pretty clueless how they could say i could have sent spam. Could it be any email address I have or the IP address itself.

Anything i can do about it?

    Cheers, Roo

if you have a trojan/alware on yours or your brothers PC , it could be acting as a spam 'zombie' . You should run an online AV scan on both machines for a start (http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ is free )

Then monitor your machines for port 25 activity (http://www.download.com/3000-2085-10062969.html - Activeports )

ify ou have a wireless facility on your broadband router , ensure its switched off.

i doubt it is from ukfsn. UKFSN is pretty reliable company - just give them a call and check

Actually a mail like this would be a sign of a good ISP - if they actually take the time to monitor their network and take action o connections that are hitting port 25 excessively ( many ISP's wont actually let you run an SMTP server unless you'd spoken with them and they are happy that you can set one up correctly )

Hi again...you say you doubt its from ukfsn...well, i called entanet (ukfsn are a reseller of entanet) and they confirmed there was this problem.

Re: Threat from ISP regarding unsolicited email. Eh?

sorry guys, I misread all the posts! very embarassing...

I thought the email you got was trying to get information from you disguising as UKFSN.

edit - btw, I agree UKFSN is a good ISP. Actually one of best ISPs in UK (together with Idnet, etc)

Its possible that you are no longer relaying spam , ( especially as your brother has just rebuilt the OS ? )

Its possible that someone if spoofing your IP , but normally that would be shown.

I also think you have something in your system, run

    AVG antispyware
    f-secure rootkit removal
    spybot search and destory
    ad-adware
    spyware terminator

edit - can try ThreatFire as well but never used this before.

Re: Threat from ISP regarding unsolicited email. Eh?

Cheers, I might do a reinstall on this PC too just to make sure.

    Update:

I received the headers of the spam...no idea what to look for but it looks like it was sent from my IP address somehow to someone in Japan..(shrugs shoulders)..
