    Slow network performance

I have a network setup where my main PC (below) stores all documents etc including movies, music, etc.

On the laptop when accessing large movie files which should be relatively fast they stutter and stop quite often.

I tried copying the file over but it was copying around 200-300KB/s, this is not right, theoretically I should be getting 6.75 MB/s but in a real world situation it would be around 5 MB/s. Documents and pictures also open extremely slowly.

My router is a Netgear WNR854T (one of the latest models) with 802.11 n capabilities. My main PC is connected to the router with a gigabit of bandwidth at it's disposal.

    Any ideas?

    Re: Slow network performance

Did you get the reliability updates for Vista?

Specifically KB938194, KB938979, KB941600 and KB941649 (type them into the search box on http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/)

I wish MS would just stick these on Windows Update - at least as optionals.

    Here's a list of the off-books updates:

    Re: Slow network performance

I installed nearly every update on that page except for the one which disables the ability to apply the TCP/IP patch. Everything is working smoothly with transfer rates of 1.30-1.90 MB/s and no more stuttering!

If it happens again after a while I'll repost in here.

    Re: Slow network performance

Still pretty poor speeds, as an example I can FTP files from my Windows XP box to my XBOX at an average 7MB/s even being wired to a switch that is connected to a old WRT54G router.
