I need help the problem is; I have just changed my SKY BROADBAND to VIRGIN CABLE they have supplied us an i think ADSL MODEM DEVICE which is for just one pc. I now want to attach my OLD SKY BROADBAND router in this so i can also get wireless access for my Laptop.
But the problem is VIRGIN is a Cable RJ45 Cable which directly goes into PC Networkcard but SKY Router has some other JACK for input. What i do now how do i connect .......

it is most likely that the sky router has a built in adsl modem and will therrefore be mostly useless with a virgin connection. you will need to buy a cable router. im sure someone on here can recommend a god quality router for you.
Virgin and Sky are different animals. Virgin uses cable modem and Sky uses ADSL. You could possible hack the Sky router and disable the ADSL bit for wireless. Search the internet to find out how. Otherwise buy a wireless cable modem router.Quote:

it's firmware is locked to Sky, you need to do some work to install the NETGEAR firmware and even then the router itself is crappy and falls over if it gets hot (which it does)
I went from NTL to Sky to NTL again and I love my WRT54GL using Thibor 15c now :)
I "obtained" my log in details from the sky router and am now back on my Belkin F5D7632.4.UK.
I'm in the market for a new router though. That's getting old. One of these, perhaps?

Seems a reasonable product on paper. Not had the pleasure of trying to return a faulty item though. I have had personal experience of returning an item from Netgear. I must say the serivce is good.
Problem is you'll have to return it to Sky. And they are totally, utterly, incomparably, amazingly, award-winningly, god damn awful at customer services. Took them weeks to delivery my router AT ALL, after loads of phone calls. It was a real farce. And they will NOT give you your log in details. I may have said that already. Bunch of trained chimps on the phones.
Mine was woeful. It was OK for short bursts with one wifi connection, but try more than one (desktop and laptop, for example) and it just gave up.
Yeah sky aren't brilliant with the whole router thing.
Also took weeks for mine to arrive, after persistent phone calls they eventually found out that parcelforce had apparently delivered it a week before. Who knows whether they were lying or not, they arranged for another to be sent out.
I also have the same problem with the wireless on this router, my pc connected to it is fine - i get 14mbps download and 650kbps upload (16.3mb/768k sync). But the moment my housemate connects via wireless too and begins downloading fairly slowly (around 70-80KB/sec - less than 1mb), I can barely browse websites and speedtests return sub 200kbps speeds.
Not had to work out a solution to this yet mainly cos he's not here at the moment, but when he returns I'm sure we'll have to.
i am new to sky broadband. so from reading this you cant just use any adsl router u want?
Thats correct - they run a locked firmware that includes the username and password.
Its against their T&C's to use anything other than their router.
( even though you *can* extract the user name and password , then use your own router , you probably *shoudln't* )
I'm having a mare with my Sky connection at the moment , its refusing to start a PPPoA connection , and has been escalated to Sky's Tier2 support...it may be some time :(
thats a pain as when i ordered it i asked the guy if i could still use my old router and he said yes.
Other sky users have hacked using the method below. I have done that myself and works fine. The provided routed is extremely unreliable.
'I don't know whether everyone is aware of how easy it is to get the username and password required to enable you to use another router for your sky broadband.
I went to 192.168.0.1 logged in and then went to, MAINTENANCE and selected BACKUP SETTINGS, from here select the top option to SAVE A COPY OF CURRENT SETTINGS, this will bring up the NETGEAR.CFG file and once saved open it with notepad and you now have the username which starts with numbers and ends with @skydsl. and then you have your password which also is made up of letters and numbers.
I put these into my old netgear router and then setup the SSID and NETWORK KEY and within seconds I am now running a non sky router and also with the option to keep the connection MODE to 108 ONLY (Not possibel on sky router) although auto 108 is fine.'
when i access my netgear.cfg it doesnt show my username/password ?
