    Re: dedicated firewall

Buy an integrated modem/router/firewall. If you are constantly fixing virus problems and trojans, you need to stop your family installing junk and clicking ads. A firewall won't fix that.

Well... depends on your config. Blocking all ports both ways might help, but I doubt that's what you wanted to hear...

ANY combined modem/router when setup correctly will do what you ask.

Which firewall are you using mate? As said by others, a modern router/modem should do that for you, and combined with personal firewalls and antivirus software should give you no problems at all.

DG834GT gets slagged a lot, but it does the job for me and my two desktops, one laptop and two kids with a passion for online flash games.

A better purchase would have been a television earlier on in the game

    Re: dedicated firewall

A dedicated firewall wont stop spyware from installing on your machine.

a NAT based router should prevent the world from seeing your machine, provided you dont forward too many ports through it. ( The draytek mentioned above is a personal favourite )

the XP firewall when correctly set up is a good layer of defence.

Don't swear in your posts ( even starred out ). And as a first time poster , try to be a little more considerate of people who are helping you out of their own choice. As the 2nd post said , user education is a key part of keeping your system secure. Is the shift key broken on your keyboard ? Its been proven that well written questions get well written answers.

    Re: dedicated firewall

look at zonealarm on every machine to help control which programs run. They do a variety of versions, including a free on, which is very competent. (if you go for the internet security package - it's cheaper to buy multiple copies at once).

I have found Dlink routers reliable, with good support - and at sensible prices.

I am considering switching to a Clark Connect box; but maybe that's a paranoid level of protection...
