    Lan confusion

I am just about to buy a new mobo and I have read it has dual RJ-45 LAN ports. Now I know 1 port will be used to connect to my router but, for the life of me, I can not work out why I, or anyone else, would need a second Lan port.

I would be grateful if someone could explain and I just hope it is nothing glaringly obvious.

    Thanks.

    Re: Lan confusion

There are two uses. You can have one connecting to the internet through a router or ethernet modem, and the other can be used for connecting to a private network that isn't accessable from the internet.

The other use it for load balancing. You can connect both ports to the same switch and have it use both connections as one. Also known as link agregation. This is provided the motherboard and your switch support 802.3ad

Its vary rare you'd use two ports in a home environment, in the work environment its very very common.
