How many WiFi hotspots where you are?

business, private, public, any!.. from where you are right now how many can you see?

netstumbler shows me 11 here, 5 of them on the same channel aswell aaaand 3 of them unencrypted infact after resetting my router the other day it automagically connected to one of them and what should pop up but confirmation of a new UPNP device, its a good job im not malicious because her (going off the AP's name) details were there for the altering. some people!

    I live out in a village ...

Got 2 of my own wireless networks, and can sometimes pick up signal off 2 other neighbours ... all are encrypted - mine with WPA rather than WEP.

APgrapher shows 7 networks for me in a suburban London area. Three of those (including mine) are secured, one is a BTOpenzone managed login, three are free for me to leech off if I wanted.

Re: How many WiFi hotspots where you are?

Well netstumbler doesn't work in Vista so i can't use that.

I normally get a few BTHomehubs and a could of Sky routers as well.

Only one of each on tonigh, but i can get about a dozen, all very weak signals though. They generally all secure i think. Although there are a coule I that have their house number in the SSID, so i could go and knock on their door if they were interfering with mine

Using the normal wireless scan in vista, I can only see my router.

I can currently see three, my own, and two very weak ones, one of which is unsecured (go figure, ignorant neighbours, guess i will be ok if my internet ever goes down...)

    4. 1 from the company downstairs, 1 x SwissCom from the hotel next door, 1 x SSID hidden and 1 from the hotel that's over the other side of the train tracks.

Re: How many WiFi hotspots where you are?

I made the mistake of driving down Birmingham new road the other wee with the Wifi on my PDA / Tomtom turned on... There were so many, BThomehub, bulldog etc.

Obviously I was driving so couldn't check them out... but they're everywhere.

I get 4 come up on my PC at home.

Sitting here at gate B28 at Linate Airport there are about 11 networks, mostly unsecured but they're the networks you can pay to use.

Non here. Unless I use my wok-wifi, then I can get a few at range.
Barely strong enough to make a connection though.

I live in a really built up area too. Im surprised!

Re: How many WiFi hotspots where you are?

    43. 3 unencrypted. All private ones.

Lots of them running on the same channels - so on some of them I would get no real speed on my wireless networks. But I have changed the channel to something a little less crowded, and while not the best it can be, it works reliably.

Free and illegal. Hope you change your mac address and computer name to somthing not obvious if you were going to do such things.

Re: How many WiFi hotspots where you are?

umm..... seriously, if someone is too stupid to set up basic security, are they really going to be smart enough to check their logs?

and if you are having problems with over crowding, your best bet would be to get an external dipole antenna and something like a 100mw (thats milliwatt not megawatt!) amplifier, which should drown out every wifi signal within about..... half a mile...

Re: How many WiFi hotspots where you are?

From my house I can only pick up mine, and a few what I presume are Sky routers

Edit: In the other room I can pick up a Belkin router, unescured, very low signal
