Can I access my file server's shared folder from a laptop outside LAN?

Is this possible? I don't mean FTP or anything... I already have that.

Instead I'm thinking of a mapped drive or some such thing, to work natively through Windows Explorer, using existing user accounts/NTFS permissions.

Is this what a VPN is for? Advice is greatly appreciated.

Glósóli: Map a drive via FTP or WebDav

windows also lets you map ftp's as network drives
