They are just playing the numbering game. I can think of almost no reasons for a home user to have 50meg down. Even with VoIP / VOD / ect.
I think they need to go back to basics
1) Im on 4 meg, but sites are slow on an evening. 4 meg is more than enough for almost any website. Get it sorted.
2) Sort the pings out in the evenings. Download speed don't matter too much to gamers.
3) More upload on the lower packages - With VoIP & browsing, this is starting to be an issue for me. I would happily pay a few quid more for a better upload.
4) If they are going to have a FUP, dont take the pee. I don't download much (and never use p2p), but if I need something one night thats big, I dont want to be punished for it. Do my download size over an entire day, not a few hours.

I think 768Kb upload is a joke for a connection with 20Mb download.
I would be happy if they just gave me a 10meg connection that was always 10mb no matter what joe bloggs was doing down the road.
I think I may only pay VM half next month and say that its not my fault other bills are also using my wallet and maybe they are using more than they should.

Nice idea a FUP for my credit card. Sorry, you can only have some money and you'll have to get it at half the speed you expected.
I wish they would just go back to 10 meg, it was rock solid here and no retarded traffic shaping. They basically say if you use your connection to its full potential for less than half an hour between 4 and 12, you get crippled. Not to mention the shaping isnt even working. You don't even get the 20meg during those hours.
All theyve done is altered what people do, you see a major slowdown from about 2:30pm, and after midnight is atrocious, barely get 6meg out of it. Eventually at 3am you get the advertised speed.
Only thing my net connections good for now is strongarming them into giving me deals and money off.
same here, my 20Mb never gets near it anymore. It used to be at about 17Mb but these days its about 6

Its a leased line 2mb up 2mb down, Its also on a 10mb bearer.
your current home connection is on a line to the datacenter shared with 20 to 50 other people the leased line has only me on it.
Home connection are normally a 20 to 24 hour SLA leased lines are on 4hour SLA

Virgin adopted a network that was at capacity providing 10Mbit.
They're struggling mightily to provide 20Mbit.
50Mbit will be akin to putting a QX9900 on a 133MHz FSB.

You get slower speeds than normal consumers. The only benefit i can think of is you get more consistency. A normal connection may vary A LOT, but it's ALWAYS above the 2mb mark... at least for me.
Why did you decide to go this route? Is there another benefit I'm not thinking of?
yes, upload, SLA, managed internet, no caps, no throttle, no FUP.
If you need a constant internet connection to host terminal services etc you really need a leased line.
As i said its on a 10mb bearer so I can go up to 10mb/10mb if I want.
20 / 20 would be very very expensive.

I'm not sure what a "bearer" is, so just wondering, if it's a 10/10 connection, then why do you say its 2/2?
Its not a 10/10 connection, nor did he say that
A bearer, when used in this context is simply the speed of the interconnect he's on.
He pays and gets 2/2 because its what he needs. He can get a maximum of 10/10 from that service should he wish to upgrade it

orly? so basically he pays 20,000$ per year for a 2/2, and I pay 768$ per year for a 20/20 that never dips below 12/6?
That sounds very logical! Unless you can let me know some incredible benefit of doing it this way... I just understand it =(
(btw, I'm going on the current [as far as i know] rate where pounds are about twice as good as $)
If you're in America, you probably have fiber to the kerb, which is much faster but slow to be rolled out in Britain.
