    Virgin media suck speeds 20mbit pfft

    I have been with ntl/virgin media for a few years now. I upgraded to the 20mbit service. And i got to say it sure as sh*t dont feel like its 20mbit.

    I have read about the traffice shpaing and high inet use policy. Whilst i may have been a high user before, im not now as im at work most of the day, but i dont see my speeds increasing with less and less use.

    All i want to know is if there is a way to get around these poxy speed restrictions... i wonder if i would be better off with adsl

    there is no way round it.

    I also find that Telewests / NTL DNS servers are so slow web browsing feels like 56k

    I did a test on speedtest.net and got 6Mb/s but a recent torrent was at 2MB/s (16 Mb/s) so I think speedtest is wrong.

    Well i have tested now with around 20 different ftp servers across the eu and usa.

    my findings;

    .se -> crap speeds when throttled 100k/400k
    .nl -> medium 400k/800k
    .no -> better 800k+

    us, not even worth posting.

    I found that with torrent clieants, becuase they effectivley open multiple threads to (sometimes) many different sources, they get around the speed restrictions.

    Namely Azerues, if you try that client at around 2am you will download at max speed. Only bad thing... torrents suck. i'm an ftp man myself. sigh... why oh why virgin...

    To be fair if Virgin wanted to give us all uncontended lines with no FUP I doubt anyone could afford it for home. (even at 2mb)

    What I don't understand is why they give you more speed but then say "But if you use it we will take it away!"
