    Netgear DG834G and Cable

Can I use this normal ADSL gateway as a Cable Router?

Got brain drain this morning and nothings working in my head.

I wouldn't have thought so. A 4-port switch maybe, but internally, the WAN is connected directly to the modem, so theres no way to take an external WAN as input afaik.
    Whats it for?

That's correct. You can't use it as a router, but you can use it as an additional 4 port switch or a wireless access point (just remember to disable NAT and DHCP services on the device).
