Help: Any BT HomeHub users out there??

    Chaps,

My Netgear DG834GT router died this weekend, after two and half years of fantastic service.
Unfortunately, it is out of warranty and I might need to get a replacement.

However, in the meantime I am now using the BT HomeHub router, which I never opened or used until now.

I am having problems with getting the laptop to connect to the hub via wireless.
The laptop is a Thinkpad T42 and uses Access Connections software to connect to the hub.

The wireless is configured as follows:

    1. Do not broadcast the SSID.
    2. Use WPA-PSK Encryption.
    3. Data Encryption: TKIP or should it be AES?
    4. WPA-PSK Version is WPA.

The AC software says it is connected to the hub but I cannot connect to the internet.

Can someone point me in the right direction with the wireless setup??
I am now cursing my luck and should have taken a backup of the router and profile settings!

    Thanks for the help.

    Take care.

Yes Splash, all the lights are on.

I'm going to change the default SSID to something else and see what happens.

I must stress that I don't use one, but I set one up last week for someone at work and it works fine. First thing to test is that you can access the router web interface (I believe this should be at ) and then check your ISP details are correct in there. Make sure that if you have MAC filtering that you have entered the MAC of your wireless NIC.

    Few things..

try changing the wireless channel.. ive always had problems when this is left to automatic on the router.

also what O/S are you using on the laptop.. if XP, there are several updates on m$ KB that improve the wireless functions (ie adding WPA2 support)

Vista.. well thats just strange at wifi anyway, try fiddling with the encryption settings.

Would be interested to hear why you say this - I've found Vista's wireless management a whole world nicer than XPs.

only set up 1 bt home hub and after messing around for 20 minutes figured out that the ssid and network key that were on the label attached to the home hub were not what was programmed into the hub!

Re: Help: Any BT HomeHub users out there??

I followed Neo_VR suggestion about changing the wireless channel to a manual one.
I changed the SSID to another name and then it worked!! Killie99, you were right!

However, it is very slow when browsing the web by the wireless.
I have to on many occasions press F5 repeatingly to load the web page.

I've not been impressed with this hub and will look to buy another Netgear DG834GT router.

Thanks to everyone for chipping in.

what signal strength are you getting on the wireless? What distance is the homehub from where your laptop is?

Re: Help: Any BT HomeHub users out there??

The signal strength indicator has full bars.
The distance between the hub and the wireless is about 4 meters.

No reason then for slow internet access if you are getting full signal. Can you go to thinkbroadband :: Broadband Speed Test and run the speed test and post back the result?

I have odd results - like random slow page loads - from mine when trying to run on channel 12 or 13 - seems fine on the lower channels though

Interference from something I'm sure but there are no detectable routers around here on those channels (which is I why I tried them in the first place)
