    Reverse DNS IRC

    Hello,

    Being a regular user of irc channels I was intreueged by how some users have cool whois information;

    eg joe@bloggs.com

where as mine is more like ~recoil@customer.blah.blah.net

How can I get a custom host from say somewhere like afraid.org to be in my whois information on irc..

    Re: Reverse DNS IRC

All depends, on networks that use services like hostserv you have have a vhost set, on networks like quakenet you will need to use something like a BNC to get a vhost
Someone left a note on a piece of cake in the fridge that said, "Do not eat!". I ate the cake and left a note saying, "Yuck, who the hell eats paper ?

    Re: Reverse DNS IRC

you don't need to actually create any dns information for this, you just want a "from" address/host setting. Most irc clients have differnet parameters to do this. It will be client, not network specific.
    It is Inevitable.....

    Re: Reverse DNS IRC

I believe you need control over your own PTR records for you IP address, which hardly any ISP's allow.

Basically you need to purchase a BNC/proxy from a provider that owns their own IP's and manages the DNS for them.

    Re: Reverse DNS IRC

if you got an irc bouncer you can pick your vhost when you set it up it also holds your nick name so other cant steal it and iirc ca take messages aswell till you login to it

    Re: Reverse DNS IRC

    Yeah i know that...

I got plenty of shells and psybnc's setup. i just wanted to know how it is possible to create you own domain and then have it pointed to your ip and vice versa. i know this isnt possible with ntl becuase they dont offer static ips, but perhaps with another provider ?

    Re: Reverse DNS IRC

i used to rent a dedicated server, which i had psybnc running on. had a domain pointing to one of my assigned ip addresses and then asked my server host to set the rdns of that ip to my domain - i was then able to use it as a vhost for my bnc

In a nutshell - Yes. However the availability of this depends on your ISP and whether they allow you to do this.

I did this with Nildram - changed all my IP range to refer to my old goodclan.co.uk domain.

I am in the process of getting Be to change my static IP from x-x-x-x.bethere.co.uk to my lovely laser chasing related domain as well.

So yes it can be done - it just depends on ISP really.
