adsl model for Virgin media

Hi

Just moved to Uk form germany. I read a few threads regarding the use of adsl modems with Virgin media (cable) but I'm not able to configure it (not even for a single PC use)
I've got a Siemens Gigaset SE515dsl (integrated modem). I've tried by disabling ADSL and also disabled dhcp.
Anyone having any idea regarding the VPI, VCI and other settings for Virgin media (cable)?

Didn't VM provide you with a cable modem foc if you are on cable or an ADSL1 if on ADSL?

I think you may have read about using cable routers on ADSL, but not ADSL routers on cable. It ain't gonna work.

You need to find out if you're on Cable or ADSL first, they are two entirely separate technology's

as far as i am aware virgin do not use adsl modems at all they only use dsl, so i am curious how you managed to connect the modem to your cable connection

hey my connection is Cable and the router is ADSL.
In the router settings, I can disable ADSL. And I can connect the LAN cable from my cable modem to one of the ethernet port of my router.
But it doesnt work..
any idea??
'coz in one of the previous discussions, I read something similar but I think some settings are wrong.

You have a DSL modem (blue box right?), What you need is a lan switch or DSL router which can accept the incoming Cable feed from the virgin box as a Wan connection, most ADSL routers will not be able to do this, therefore i'm afraid you are stuck and you won't be able to use the ADSL router.

It won't work. Period. The external interface (the "side" that faces the Internet, if you will) on an ADSL router is provided by an ADSL modem. You need a router with an ethernet external interface, such as:

dabs.com - Buffalo Cable/DSL Router & Access Point (WHR-HP-G54-1)

You cannot connect the external interface of an ADSL router to cable, and the internal interfaces of such a router don't route; they are all on the same subnet.

Virgin offer ADSL and cable based broadband connections, so they do use ADSL modems.

You could use your current ADSL router as a switch and wireless access point (if it has one built in) but it won't be routing any data.

Save yourself a lot of hassle and grab something like a Linksys WRT54GL.

Which means that your router won't route; you can't do NAT even if you could get it to connect, it won't be doing any firewalling - basically even if it connected, you'd be getting nothing beyond what you'd get just plugging your PC into the modem directly. You need (to get a routed setup) a cable/dsl router, i.e. one with an external ethernet interface.

It doesn't matter if you want to connect 1 or 10 computers to the internet, you can't do it using an ADSL router when you have a cable internet connection. End of.

What I was saying is that you could use that ADSL router to do something other than routing data. If that ADSL router has wireless then you could use that ADSL router as a wireless access point. If it has more than 1 LAN ethernet port then you can use it as a switch, ie, for connecting multiple computers together.

What you're trying to do isn't going to work. End of.

You need a router with an ethernet WAN (Wide Area Network, ie "internet") port not an ADSL modem.

Listen to what the guys are saying they are correct, i am on virgin cable and have tried numerous routers but settled on a netgear WGT624 as everything else couldnt cope with the 20mb speed, would crash under torrent usage. This netgear is the only thing i have tried that can actually cope with fast speeds and torrents. I had a linksys router and even used the modded firmware which fixed it a little but still wasnt a good as this netgear, it has never missed a beat.

WGT624v3 if your interested.

Plain english the router you have ( if its ADSL ) isnt going to work, you need a cable router wether it be wireless or wired.
