Sky rent there BB from BT... should I be worried?

I have just moved into my new house and have gone with sky as I was very limited. But I'm outside there supported area so they rent the BB from BT to still connect me.

Now should I be worried about what speeds / stability I will receive from this connection?

Does anyone have any experience of getting the BB through sky through BT?

Thats how ADSL works. Don't worry about it.

Do you mean that youre on a BT landline through which you get Sky ADSL or that you have a BT connection to DSL ?

If the 2nd it is cause for concern, but not outright panic.

Re: Sky rent there BB from BT... should I be worried?

Sky where it doesn't have kit in the local exchange (LLU) simply resells BT's own broadband with its own level of service - much like Tiscali, Pipex etc.

Nothing to worry about really, only that through the BT ADSL kit you will only get a max of 8mb, not the 16 or 24 that some other LLU providers are offering.

Re: Sky rent there BB from BT... should I be worried?

Sky BB comes from Easynet (Sky actually own Easynet).

If you can get the ADSL2+ product from Sky (the upto 16Mbit product) then you'll be connecting to the internet using Easynet owned equipment that's been placed in a BT exchange. That means that Easynet have unbundled that exchange.

if you're on the standard MaxDSL product (upto 8Mbit) then you're connected to BT equipment in the exchange).

Re: Sky rent there BB from BT... should I be worried?

    Thanks all.

I tried getting the sea, speak, surf package from sky but I'm outside the range of sky’s exchange so the BB doesn’t go through sky. Therefore sky rent it from BT to still offer BB to people. This however only goes up to 8meg down.

So since it’s a BT phone line that sky use anyway it sounds as if it will make no difference apart from paying and being supported by sky instead of BT.

I can’t remember how much the BB will be off hand but it was nearer the £20 mark.

Re: Sky rent there BB from BT... should I be worried?

Im on sky after being told by BE I live too far from the exchange.

SKy has been rock solid for me since signing up. Only getting 2-3 meg down but the connection is solid. The only downer is that you have to use the sky branded router atm and noone has managed to hack it yet. For most people this wont be a problem as the router isnt too bad(its a rebadged netgear router) but I have a draytek 2600G sitting there gathering dust now.

The ISP`s that are doing LLU(Talk talk, Sky, BE etc) all are tryi ng to get 100% coverage as much as possible. it means that after the initial price for renting the copper from BT everything else is pure proft which in turn means that they can offer high caps etc. With IPstream companies have to pay BT for the bandwidth they use and it gets expensive.

They will never have 100% coverage, because it simply isn't finacially viable to do so. Even BT can't (and are not required to) do it.

The remainder isn't pure profit, as the still need to lease bandwidth and run their backend systems, but avoiding the BT network they have more flexability and can do it cheaper per connection, however their initial outlay is a lot more (installing dSLAMs in exchanges is not an inexpensive business)

Ok To rephrase then They`ll want to get as close to the same level of coverage as BT withint the uk,

Once they have their own equipment in the exchanges then costs are negligible. Whoa re they leasing bandwidth off?

Once you have your own equipment in the exchange then Its your own network right to the places where you peer with other people(level 3 etc) RUnning backend equipment as well is again a very small amount of money compared to the amount they pay to BT atm which means that for all intents and purposes the service is mostly profit.

I have worked for 2 different ISP`s now. The LLU model gives huge profits and means that you are no longer dependant on Another company (well BT still own the copper but thats unlikely to change in the forseeable future)

Re: Sky rent there BB from BT... should I be worried?

Some of the mainstream LLU ISPs (like TalkTalk, Sky, Orange, etc) might get close to BTs coverage, but there are areas that will only get BT as they have to offer ADSL there.

It's just a shame that the interesting ISPs like Zen and Be (yes i know they are now O2 and will probably suffer as a result) aren't available in many places. I don't mind paying a decent monthly fee for good broadband

Re: Sky rent there BB from BT... should I be worried?

    Zen is available countrywide mate.

Their llu is only available in 4 exchanges and the decent offers are only available on the rochdale exchange. all the other exchanges use the same caps as the ipstream package.

I thought BE had pretty decent coverage now? I know the exchange Im connected to has BE and I dont really class it as a main exchange.

IMO SKy bb is great but then I`ve had no problems so far,

Re: Sky rent there BB from BT... should I be worried?

I was refering to Zen's LLU. I didn't realise they were only in 4 exchanges, thats a shame.

In Aberdeen we only have AOL, Sky and TalkTalk... if we are lucky some exchanges don't have all three.

The problem with Sky is I don't have Sky at all and don't want their TV or phone, just BB please.

Aberdeen was one of the first cties with ADSL, it's a shame it seems to be lagging behind on everything else now.

Aye Zen are only doing LLu in the immediate area around the head offices.

BT`s latest love-in is with cardiff for 21cn network.

I already had sky tv so the choice for me was pay lots for something like demon or give sky a chance and so far so good

Thats not quite true, it is quite easy to get ur u/p off the dg834gt that sky provide and then use ur own router, many people do this, I did it for 5 weeks while waiting for a replacement, it is merely against T&C's and not supported. Go to SkyUser - The Unofficial Help and Support Forum for everything Sky! if u want more info, or indeed any info on Sky BB thats worth anything, some great peeps on there

Also note that Sky now provide two new routers, one is still Netgear but the other is not, apparently they are far superior to the current pos

Edit: The new Netgear/Sagen router Sky are now using has no current hacks, and apparently flashing it will render it useless, but the old v1 is still easy to get ur u/p from
