Smile Sky Broadband, Anyone Here Got It?.

Thinking of switching over to save a few quid (£15) a month over what i'm paying with Nildram now, and i was wondering if anyone here uses it?. Worried about being locked to using the Standard Sky router and was interested in any general hassles people have had with them...

Re: Sky Broadband, Anyone Here Got It?.

I dont know what the problem with using the SKY router thing is???? I'll be the first to admit that i know little about networking but as for just using it for a wireless router around the house its very very good.

My results at the moment are:

Not consideringt i am 2km+ from the exchange.
At my last house i was 1.2km from the exchange and had 15mb up and 678kb down 24/7.

It was all switched on the correct day. The router arrived 3 days after telephone ordering.

Its the same with anything else...you only here about the problems which are obviously a small percentage of the whole picture.

I don't think for the price it can be beaten. (I only pay a tenner).

Got a very nice (and expensive) Draytek router here i would rather use having used Netgear stuff before, that and its already setup with all my port forwarding etc...

The Netgear Router they supply isn't that bad , although it does lack some of the features of the draytek kit.

there *may* be a workaround in place to try and save the config form the sky router which you can use , but I wouldn't nessesarily want to try it.

There is a workaround for the Netgear so you can get the SKY set username and password from it to use a different router. If you google it i am sure you find what you are looking for.

I wont post a link as i suspect from reading Mobys post and the way i am interpretting the rules, that i am not allowed to post it so i wont risk it.

Had a quick look around last night and read about getting the details out of the standard router. Anyone care to comment on the quality of the service from them?, speeds?, uptime etc...

Re: Sky Broadband, Anyone Here Got It?.

Speedwise I'm in a bit of an ADSL backwater anyway, so I can't really comment on it , althoguh it is faster than my old pipex 512k service. ( When I ordered it, I was told that I'd only get a 512k service , but it was £20 a month less than I was paying for pipex , so wasn't fussed , as it is I get about 1.5-2 meg so I'm not too upset.)

I had a bit of a hiccup when switching over from pipex when it looked like the line had been provisioned and it apparently hadn't , but as pipex had decided to terminate my service anyhow , I already had downtime. Since the service started 'properly' I've not had any uptime issues.

Tech support is a bit hit and miss, I tend to escalate things quite quickly so that I can actually speak to a decent network engineer I can talk to on their level , but you still have to jump through a few indian shaped hoops to get there

Cheers Moby, sounds like i'm in the same sort of position as you anyway location-wise...i'm getting 1.5 to 2meg tops with Nildram, despite the 'you can get up to 8meg' malarky. Seems like it might be a go-er after New Years then...

Yep my package is the up to 8 meg one , but at least they where upfront when it came down to what I'd actually get , which I knew anyways ( I want my 21Cn fibre trial connection back - free 10 meg down 2 meg up ! )

Re: Sky Broadband, Anyone Here Got It?.

I have sky package and Its brilliant. I live miles from the exchange and I get 2.4 meg and its solid.

The new router from Sky currently hasnt been hacked at least not as far as I know.

I`m in a similar position in that I have a draytek router sitting in the cupboard gathering dust. That said though the Netgear supplied has been solid and the wirless works fine

Is there options for port forwarding etc Kop or have they crippled the firmware totally?.

Re: Sky Broadband, Anyone Here Got It?.

    Router is pretty decent spec.

Port forwarding work, Dyn DNS works fine as well.

The only prob i have with Sky is the lack of static IP`s but using Dyn DNS has made it bearable.

In all honesty the Sky router is fine and does a really good job. I understand why Sky force you to use their routers as it makes diagnostics so much easier for their staff to do. Its just a shame having my draytek sitting there not being used.

Wireless range is also pretty good on it. Better than the draytek`s standard aerials.

Re: Sky Broadband, Anyone Here Got It?.

I have had it since sky released the service.
Never had a problem with it, uptime has been excellent. Speed is good too, I can consistantly download at 13000kbps, upload at 650kbps 24/7.
Can't comment on customer services as I have never had to call them.
The sky router does the job well, it may be possible to use your router but whether it's worth th effort, you will have to decide.
