    Re: PS3 online

you will need to get your self a wireless router. the ps3 has a wireless card built in so there will be no need to run a cable. if you buy one with a adsl modem built in means you can get rid of the talk talk modem. im sure some one on here can recomments a decent piece of equipment.

ive heard wireless connections and all that stuff is not "reliable" and better if it's wired. heard one of these?

    PowerLine Wall-Plugged HD Ethernet Adapter - HDX101

if your looking at a wired connection between the PS3 and the internet would you recommend these? i read they are good.

The Solwise and Devolo ones are better. I use the Solwise 200Mbps HomePlug AV around my flat and they're really good, even allowing me to stream HD X264 content with no slow downs.

    Homeplug AV

In my av centre I have a switch plugged into the HomePlug so the Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, Mac Mini & Pinnacle Showcentre all share the connection with no problems.

    Re: PS3 online

so would you recommend these ethernet adaptors? (it's the first time ive heard of them). and is it true that you just plug it in to the mains socket then connect your PS3 using an ethernet cable? is that easy?

Yep, it's that easy. I've got a pair of the Netgear ones with an Xbox 360 and Slingbox connected to them.

In this case though I'd go the cheaper route and get a wireless router because with the modem you currently have you'll either have to unplug the ethernet for your PC or run ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) on your PC. Using ICS your PC would be acting as a router so the PC would have to be turned on for the PS3 to get online. You would also have to get another ethernet card for the PC.

    Re: PS3 online

ive heard wireless connections are not reliable. i don't want to go the wireless route as ive heard it's not reliable and im not a beleiver of wireless connections and besides im not familiar with wireless in general.

so, would you recommend an ethernet adapter or a PC ethernet card? (all i need is just to connect my PS3 online the easiest and most practical/reliable way.

    Re: PS3 online

Some wireless kit can be unreliable - anything with a Belkin sticker on for a start but it's somewhat OTT to say that wireless as a whole is unreliable.

If you're really (and irrationally IMO) against wireless then you'd be best of buying a router and the homeplugs so that way the PC can be off and the PS3 can get online.

    Re: PS3 online

The term 'ethernet adapter' could mean all sorts of things. I know Netgear call them that but it's a daft description.

I was referring to homeplugs, like the Netgear HDX101 you linked to earlier.

    Re: PS3 online

so, would homeplugs be the way then? and i know ive asked this before but am i correct in saying: plug the homeplug into the mains then connect your PS3 using an ethernet cable then i can now go online?

    Re: PS3 online

Homeplugs are certainly an option. If you went down that route and didn't buy a router then at one end you'd have a homeplug, plugged into the mains with an ethernet cable to the modem. At the other end you'd have a homeplug, plugged into the mains with an ethernet cable to the PS3.

    Re: PS3 online

so, you mean i would still need a separate modem? or do i connect my PS3 directly to the homeplug?

    Re: PS3 online

Having thought about it, I don't think my suggestion of connecting the modem to the homeplug is going to work as I don't know if the PS3 will be able to pass the username and password on to the modem for it to connect to your ISP.

Have a look at ICS and shove another NIC into your PC.

    Re: PS3 online

    Would this not work:

Internet - Modem - 10/100mb Switch - PC and HomePlug into switch and then PS3 into another Homeplug at the other end.

This assumes that your modem is actually a modem/router.

If the modem is a router then yes. I assumed that the modem is actually a modem.
